Hi All, I will be in Vancouver for almost two weeks starting later this week (from San Diego). I (hopefully) have at least done my basic research and current plans are to go to Driftwood when out on Victoria, Alibi Room (as often as possible), stop at Biercraft, possible stop at Brassneck, and and was told to try Red Racer IPA. Staying near BC Place is there anything I am grossly overlooking? Also (and really my main question), what type of season/special release stuff can I be hoping to look for in that window? Anything specific from Driftwood or Four Winds? Thanks! ps - will probably be bringing up (a little) beer with me, what type of stuff would be sought after?
No tasting room at Driftwood, just a growler-fill bar and everything you'd find there, you could find at any liquor store, not worth a stop. Definitely hit The Drake Eatery when you come to Victoria though. Unfortunately, you'll be just early for the opening of the new Central City Brewpub right near BC Place (early July), but you won't have any trouble finding Red Racer on tap around town. The spots you've picked out in Van are all good though. New batch of Nectarous is supposed to be released again in a week or two so definitely keep your eyes peeled, besides that, anything you see from 4W that's in a bomber or 750mL you'll probably want to grab. There should be at least one Driftwood sour on the shelves too, pick them up if you see them. And don't forget to drink a bunch of Fat Tug on tap!
Thanks I'm really interested in finding/trying Nectarous. I would love to find some good local sours. Is Nectarous a brewery only release or do local shops get it as well?
It'll be all over when it comes out - Four Winds have talked about brewery only stuff but we've yet to see any yet, and Nectarous isn't part of that program. Right now, there's still some of the latest Driftwood Dark Sour Obscuritas on shelves, as well as a few cases of four winds Sovereign super saison around in a few of the usual spots too - but I'm not sure they'll last 2 weeks, honestly - at least not in Vancouver (no idea if you'd have better luck in Victoria). I can pick a couple up and set them aside for you if you like - shoot me a message if you're into it.
Still a fair bit of Sovereign over here in Victoria, I'd guess it'll last about 3 more weeks. There still might be some Juxtapose left too, though it seems to be getting pretty scarce. If you're in town, there's another new sour coming out on the 16th from Moon Under Water called Tempus Corvi.
I'll be coming in on Friday and believe we will be out on Victoria on the 15th. Can you recommend a good bottle shop on Victoria. Also, since a driftwood trip there seems like not the best use of time, is Phillips Brewing another option?
Cook St. is a favourite bottle shop of mine in Victoria. Brewery wise, I'd argue Moon Under Water is a better bet nowadays. Solid core lineup and some really interesting one offs. And, you can eat there!
Same deal with Phillips, no tasting room, all beer for growler fill easily found around town in liquor stores, no need to visit unless you want to do a brewery tour or just check the place out. Really, good beer is fairly ubiquitous here, you won't have to do too much searching, most decent restaurants and bars will have a solid selection of local craft. My best local tip, OLO restaurant has amazing food (though pricey) and always has a cellared Driftwood sour on the menu. For bottleshops, The Strath is convenient to downtown but meh, check out Spinnakers Spirt Merchants in Vic West or as Kump said, Cook St Liquor depending on which side of downtown you're on.
If you're going to stop at Brassneck, I would also go to Main Street Brewing and 33 Acres. They're within a few blocks of each other. I would also recommend Strange Fellows on Clark Drive, and if you're going to do Strange Fellows, you could also do Off the Rail and Bomber, since they're within walking distance. A little farther up, and you've got Storm, Parallel 49, and Powell Street. Growlerfill.ca has hours and a map for different tasting rooms / places to fill your growler. Definitely do Alibi Room, and I would also go to St. Augustine's at Commercial and Broadway -- they've got 60+ taps, and you can see their taplist on their website: http://staugustinesvancouver.com/ It shows real time stats for how much of each beer is remaining. If you're looking for Juxtapose, it might be easier to find at some of the liquor stores that aren't as much craft beer destinations, since they'll be less likely to be sold out. Broadway Liquor Store, for example, has a decent craft selection, but isn't nearly as popular as Brewery Creek or Legacy.
Check out , http://victoriabeers.com/growlers/ , a list of Victoria's 6 breweries & 5 brewpubs Bottle shop's Strathcona good selection ok pricing , Spinnaker's Merchant West decent selection again ok pricing , my fav's , Hillside LS good selection & even better pricing , Cascadia real good selection ok pricing ... I've just arrived in Victotia and will be going to Vancouver also in the next few days. Does anyone know if there is any Tempus Corvi or Nectarous left anywhere? Would love to pick up a bottle of each. Thanks
There may be some Tempus Corvi left at the brewery (it was a brewery only release), if not BM me and I can likely hand off a bottle to you. Nectarous was just released a couple of days ago so there should still be a bunch floating around Vancouver, including at the brewery. It hasn't made it out to the island just yet but I'm expecting it sometime early next week, it'll be at all the better beer stores when it does get here. Still some Obscuritas around out here too, keep your eyes peeled for that!
Sorry I'm late to the thread, but did you find what you want? You were hunting some nice bottles that get snatched up quick. And Red Racer IPA sometimes ends up in SD (I've seen it at Bottlecraft North Park).
Thanks for the heads up Beervana I was able to pick up a few bottles of the Tempus Corvi at the brewery. Off to Vancouver tomorrow and will be on the hunt for Necrarous!
If you are downtown the Denman store (on Denman and Comox) still has Nectarous. Tempus Corvi was poring at a Vancouver beer festival on Saturday, great stuff.
I heard that a few stores are expecting deliveries of it today as well - Hastings Liquor Store comes to mind. Brewery Creek's limits have it lasting longer than last time too!
