So my job is flying me into Maine the weekend of July 11th. I'll be in Winslow, ME Monday and Tuesday for work but want to play my first couple of days there. I used to live in Topsham for a couple years back in the 90's as a kid and plan on checking out the old house as long as the base will let me on. Anyways. I'm obviously going to hit MBC and Allagash while I'm there. I'm kind of stuck on what to do that Sunday. I have 2 options:

Red Sox / Yankees have a 1pm game down in Boston that I wouldn't mind attending. Would that be a welcoming environment for a Cards fan? Also, they obviously have a shit ton of breweries down there but I've heard Jack's Abbey and Trillium are closed on Sundays? I'd definitely hit Night Shift but visiting Jack's Abbey is a big want on my end but them being closed bums me out.

My other option would be to drive to Vermont and check out Hill Farmstead and Lawsons. I guess my question is what's more worth it? I could probably convince my wife to one day road trip to Boston but traveling to Vermont for beer isn't much fun for her or the kids. On the other hand, crossing Fenway off the bucket list would be awesome although no Jack's Abbey or Trillium would be a downer.

It appears Hill Farmstead is closed on Sundays. Wow. What the hell is up with the northeast?

when you are at Allagash, go to Bissell Bros, Foundation, and Austin St. All in the same building at the beginning of the road Allagash is on.

Awesome. Will definitely do that. Are any of those brewpubs so I can get a bite to eat to soak up the suds?

Bootleggers in Topsham is a very kick ass bottle shop. I'd hit up the Portland breweries, and MBC on the way south from Freeport.
For the kids, the LL Bean store in Freeport is fun. Wolfes Neck state part in Freeport is a very family friendly hike/walk. A little more intense, but still very easy is Bradbury Mountain, about 10 minutes from the front door of MBC.
Personally, I wouldn't attempt VT. Beer isn't that much better, no guarantee you'd even get it, and it's just far.

I'd do a Sea Dogs game, spend some time in Portland, and hit up a combo of Bissell, Foundation, Allagash and MBC. I don't think it'd be a bad week...

I don't think Cardinals fans would take much flak in Fenway. Most breweries are closed on Sunday unfortunately. Tributary on the way to Boston in Kittery just off 95 is open Sunday's though. Redstone liquors is one of the best liquor stores in MA also just off 95 if you make it Boston.

There is usually a good food truck at BB. If your in portland novare res has a pretty seriuos bottle list.

If you are a serious baseball fan, do Fenway.

Spend Saturday banging out the Portland beer scene. As mentioned it is "easy" to hit up 5+ in one day with the trio that's in the same building (all good) right by Allagash.

Cambridge Brewing Co. is open on Sundays, their beers are not far below Jack's Abby and Trillium IMO (some are better). Plus you have Meadhall and Lord Hobo within a stone's throw in either direction, and they may have some of the locals on tap.

CBC is very family friendly as well.

Not a lot to add here, but seconding what a lot of people are saying. Drop wife and kids at L.L. Bean/Freeport shopping while you hit MBC, then hit the Allagash and Bissell/Foundation/Austin combo because it's easy.

Sunday is family day - should be pretty easy to get Sox tickets on Stubhub based on how they're playing. Yard House down the street from Fenway usually has a decent taplist, and is family friendly if you don't want to trek over to CBC. Enjoy!

I think I may have caused a little confusion. I won't have the wife and kids for this trip. It'll be all me. I was trying to justify the trip to Vermont since I know she would never go for that kind of detour down the line if we ever visited the northeast. With Hill Farmstead being closed on Sundays, I'll more than likely make the trek down to Boston.

I, for sure, plan on hitting MBC, Allagash and all of the breweries in that park. Also going to make it a priority to stop at Novere Res Bier Cafe. I'll "make due" with Night Shift and might stop at Smuttynose if that's worth it inbetween.

Sidenote: I hated that LL Bean store as a young, teenage boy. My parents would drag us there once a month and we'd spend what felt like hours there. Fast forward to now, I'm 31 and am looking really forward to going back to it.

I'll save Vermont for another time.

Another recommendation to stay in ME. Don't waste your time and money on a RedSox game. The Seadog are right in Portland.

In Freeport Linda Beans across the street form LL Bean usually has some good stuff on tap. Also if you like seafood the Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster is the place to go. BYOB so grab some beer at MBC and have some good eats. Fried food out front and steamed seafood and chowder at back window. The make really good lobster bisque

I'm going to second this. I'm as big a detractor of Fenway as they come, but the first visit or two can be pretty special. It's a great piece of history. A great, uncomfortable, amenity-lacking, cramped, outdated, decrepit piece of history.
Around the corner form Fenway you will find the Lower Depths, a good beer bar. The Yard House, while a chain, still has a pretty good tap list as well. Skip Boston Beer Works.

And while it is a bummer that you will miss out on visiting the Jack's Abby brewery, you should be able to find a wide range of their stuff at most good beer stores in MA.

As for the rest of your trip south, I'm going to second the earlier suggestion of Tributary. It is the new brewery of Todd Mott, the former brewer at the Portsmouth Brewery, and the creator of Kate the Great RIS, which at one time was the top-rated American beer on BA (he apparently also created the Boston-ubiquitous Harpoon IPA).

Other spots between Portland and Boston that are open on Sundays include Aeronaut and Slumbrew in Union Square, Somerville, and Earth Eagle in Portsmouth.

Third vote for Tod Mott's Tributary Brewing in Kittery; maybe he'll have Tod the Lesser on tap; but you should go to Marshall's Wharf in Belfast, Liberal Cup in Hallowell, and Banded Horn in Biddeford; closer to where your at.

On a side note. Is allagash brewery tour worth it or is like most other breweries tours.

Allagash is a standard brewery tour. But the samples are worth it especially if they have something unique on tap. I even think you don't have to tale the tour and they will give you free samples.
