    Hello!

Recently I visited Frankenmuth with my husband for an evening and we had dinner at Frankenmuth Brewery. I had the Frankenmuth Brown Hound Dunkel and really enjoyed it.

I am going camping next weekend and thought this would be a great style for evening campfires, but.. I don't think I will have time to drive over to Frankenmuth before we leave. This is a new style of beer for me, so I was hoping I could get some advice on more readily available Munich style Dunkel lagers. Any suggestions for ones I can pick up easily? Also, Is this style good in cans? I live in Michigan.

    Thanks

Warsteiner dunkel is good and should be available in MI. Might be able to find it in cans too.

This is a style there should be more of, and finding it in cans will be even rarer, unfortunately. Hofbrau and Spaten make some very solid ones (they might actually be called 'Dark' on the label), and they are in affordable sixers. Ayinger Altbairisch is a step above, but pricier in 500ml bottles.

You could also try some other Continental Dark beers, like Czechvar- they will be very similar.

I think Ayinger's Dunkel is phenomenal, and readily accessible in most areas, too; albeit, only in individual larger-format bottles (at least that is the only format I've encountered)

Go to this list of examples of that style of beer in the BA database:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/46/

They are listed in order of the number of times they've been reviewed and so that is also a reasonable predictor of availability.

On that page there is also a link to the list ordered from highest to lowest by how much BAs over the months/years have liked those beers.

Working back and forth between the two lists and your local beer stores you should be able to find more than one you'll enjoy (might even want to get more than one so you can try more than one and decide which you like best).

Bottles or cans are pretty much the same flavor wise, the difference has to do with ease of shipping and shelf life of the beer (when canned properly). The advantage of cans for a camping trip are transportability in and back out again.

Have fun. I think you'll enjoy what you get!

Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel-might as well drink one of the style kings
    Weißenoher Bonifatius Dunkel
    König Ludwig Dunkel is solid
Krombacher Dunkel is acceptable, but not more

Ayinger & Schönramer's Dunkel's are supposedly great too

    Try
Veldensteiner Landbier if you see it in your area

Erdinger Dünkel is my personal favorite. It seems to be pretty readily available in most places.

Sly Fox Dunkel Lager is in cans. But it probably doesn't make it out to Michigan.

Shame Victory doesn't have a bottled Dunkel - but I understand why they don't.

For me Dunkels fit well into that period between summer is drawing its curtains and Halloween.

The only ones I have regular access to are Ayinger, Spaten, Hofbrau, Sly Fox (above).

What about a Scwarzbier? Kostritzer comes in 16 oz cans now and for cheap (4.99 for a 4-pack)!

This is a Dunkelweizen and is considerably different in character than a Munich Dunkel.

I realize that it is a weissbier I was just trying to give an idea of something approximate since that's what OP was asking for, at least how I read it.

Thanks for the correction, though, I guess.

Correction wasn't necessarily for you, but to advise the OP -- who asked:
If she's looking for more Munich Dunkels, I have the feeling that the distinctively different character a Weizen yeast adds to a beer could be surprising in comparison to what someone expects in a Munich Dunkel.

That being said, there's no reason not to try Erdinger's beers in order to broaden appreciation.

Yeah that's good advice. To me, the yeastiness is the main super obvious difference between the two and I think it could probably go either way. People seem to either love or hate the yeast flavor in weizens.

It never hurts to try as much as possible to broaden horizons, like you said, though maybe in this case if she can't find one and is desperate a schwartzbier would be different enough yet close enough to not put her off, without risking hating that sweet, sweet yeast. : )

I happened to notice recently Negra Modelo's classification got switched to Munich Dunkel Lager. When I joined BA it was a Vienna Lager.

They used to bottle their Victory All-Malt Dark Lager - some of the reviews here on BA mention bottles as late as 2004 - 2005.

Still doesn't taste like a good example of either. :astonished:

Perhaps you're right. The OP asked for ones readily available ... that it definitely is.
