Is there any place in MN that serves "a lot" of rauchbiers? I'm not really a fan, so I don't watch terribly closely, but my understanding is that it's a style enough on the fringes of general taste that you may find one here and there, but rarely an accumulation of multiple rauchbiers in any one place (outside of a smoked beer festival, which I've never encountered).

As you might've seen, the Fire & Brimstone fest is for chili beers as well as rauchbiers. And even though I like rauchbiers a lot, I'm not sure I could handle a festival which is nothing but smoked beers.

    Bamberg.
Aside from that, what others have mentioned. It is sometimes rare to see 1, let alone "a lot".

    Hey Guys,

Visiting Portland in August. Just stopping by to say thanks for putting this together and keeping it updated! Awesomely helpful. Will definitely hit one of the walking tours.

We have a few taprooms that have 3 or 4 smokey or rauchbiers on tap. That is what I would consider a lot. We also have a brewery that primarily brews smoked beers. http://www.hammerheartbrewing.com/ I strongly prefer darker and or smokier beers. I'll never understand the magic of using 2-row malt and 17 ounces of hops to make an IPA's. Also if anyone can recommend a place that serves a lot of sour beer that would be awesome. Cheers.

Cascade would be the obvious answer here, but most of the beer bars in town will have at least a couple sour/wild things on at any given time. Also, if you have a car and 4-5 hours to kill you should probably drive out to de Garde and bask in the glorious Tillamook Terroirâ„¢

Sorry to get in late on the child/no child discussion. My understanding is that you have to have food available for purchase as well as seating for 34 or more people. I was told by a local brewpub here in EUG that you can have a freezer on premises stocked with hot pockets and 34 seats and allow minors. Many of the breweries/tasting rooms here have food carts present to fill the food need. One doesn't have the seating so I can't bring my kids (so I don't really ever go there). The discussion of wanting a place without the kids running under foot has actually been impacting my thought process on how to run the tasting room once we get opened. I have kids and want to have a strong family atmosphere, but also understand the desire to get away with the wife, or just to have a few on my own. I'm actually building into the business plan dual-level seating. The downstairs will allow children, the upstairs will not (or at least not young and loud kids, like my boys).

This came dangerously close to falling off the page. Also, it may be time to archive it and post the summer version. Paging @guajolote

Also, is anyone going to Baerlic today for their anniversary party?

Yep. Update is needed. I will try to get to it today or tomorrow. I will be adding some sort of notation for places that allow kids to the next update. Any other requests?

Are there any recommendations for places to stay? Either neighborhood based or specific hotels?

I just came home from a trip to portland and stayed through AirBnB in the SE (Buck man if I recall correctly). Pretty much everywhere was simple to get to via public transport from there.

Also, thanks to everyone for the information in this thread and answering my questions. Portland was amazing! Super stoked about the De Garde I was able to find; got a Bu weisse and Petit Desay as expected, but also landed a Hose, Cherry Raz Bu, Fauxder, Peach Bu and two bottles of The Broken Truck. Tried the hose so far and it was delicious!

We stayed here and it's an excellent location.
    DoubleTree Portland

There's a MAX light rail stop right at the hotel. It's also walking distance to Apex, Cascade, The Commons, Hair of the Dog on the East side of the river. I walk a lot so I also walked to the Pearl District to Deschuttes, Bridgeport, Fat Head's, etc, etc. although you can take the MAX. BTW, you can also catch a bus right outside the hotel to go to Apex etc if you don't feel like walking.

I've said it before, but this guide/thread was a ton of help to me in planning all the places I wanted to visit while in town.

Thanks for the recommendations. It looks like DoubleTree is booked during my stay.

Last time I got a good deal at the Residence Inn Downtown, which is actually in the Pearl. Great location and beautiful hotel. The Ace Hotel is also really nice and has a great location. On the other side of the river Jupiter is nice, but can be loud, also in a good location for getting around. If you want to go baller The Nines or Heathman.
    Otherwise I would recommend Airbnb.

Any shops with 12 pack shippers? Also, flying Southwest, 2 free check in baggages, I assume I would be safe checking 2 -12 pack coolers?

This is great news. I'm booked there later this month, but wasn't sure what to expect distance-wise to some of these places. Thanks!

Rose City Wine Storage. It's on 1st and Belmont, a block or so away from Hair of the Dog.
