Batch of Fly?

    Average batch. Mash for 30 minutes, Boil for 60 and cool in 15-20 minutes. The rest is heating water.

    I also overnight mash a lot. Which makes the brew day crazy fast. I love brewing but I rarely have time so I have to be efficient.

    What does a batch of fly do for the beer. :wink: Edit - see the thread title.

    My usual is to fly sparge, my system is set up for that. I have batch sparged using a round cooler, can't drain that fast. Might get a Coleman and try the hose braid.

    Having some discussion with a guy who makes a lot of German lagers, he was convinced his best ones use no sparge. I might try that.

    The highers efficiency for batch sparging is when the water additions are equal. Kai did some studies on that and has it on his page.

    I have adopted no-sparge for most of my beers, and I really like the results. I typically do a sacch rest plus mashout, as opposed to a (thinner) sacch rest with all of the water. I only mention these variations because someone told me recently that what I do is not a true no-sparge, to which I say bollocks.

    That's is what I do. I mash out with all my second addition. Usually in equal amounts.

    I also started with a fly system and loved it, especially for very large grain bills. My 10 gallon RIS recipe calls for 40 pounds of grain so batch sparging is totally out of the question. But without changing anything I can also batch sparge if I want to. I don't see any real time savings nor is my efficiency significantly different with either method. I will also sometimes use a hybrid method where I'll batch sparge the initial batch then finish with fly sparging(usually around lunchtime).
