My husband and I are planning a trip to the "Hops Highway" in a couple weeks and we were looking for places off the I-5 to stop in at. We are coming from San Luis Obispo County and while we normally travel the 101 and know all the breweries along the way, we have decided to take a different route. Are there any suggestions of must stop at places? It looks like a four hour trip before our first stop, and we would like to stop at any places on the way we have yet to visit.

Is the "Hops Highway" the 78 in North San Diego County?

Yeah it is! We plan on hitting all those breweries, but we have 2 days to do it in, and we were planning on finding a place or 2 to stop in at along the way

Eagle Rock, Cismontane, Noble Ale Works, Bagby Beer all pretty quick off the 5 South and great beers. Just a heads up on the 78. It has traffic and is a shitty drive during the day, all day. Cops are cracking down big time around all these breweries right now so watch out if no DD. Good luck.

Oh yeah! Thanks! We got a friend we are picking up along the way to DD for us! Safety first, I am one of those crazy people that won't drive if I had even one drink. I will have to see which ones of those we can check out.

Make sure to hit Highland Park Brewing which is a few minutes off the 5. I'd suggest skipping Eagle Rock. Noble Ale Works is a great stop.

Oh great! Thank you! We saw Noble Ale Works last time we were passing through Anaheim, so probably will stop here on this trip. I will check out the rest online for sure! This has helped so much, there are so many places out there to try and narrow down just by websites, pics and reviews was getting daunting!

I've worked off the 78 in Oceanside for 6 years now, commuting from both Mission Bay and Scripps Ranch... it isnt THAT bad.... in fact it can't even come close to how bad the 805 is. Slow in some spots in the morning drive (mostly at the 15 interchange) and slow after work around San Marcos, but still quite open most of the other times, especially weekends. I'd rather be on the 78 during rush hour than any $hitty LA freeway any time of any day.

Of course, you also have all the Pizza Ports right off the I-5- San Clemente (one of my favorites), Carlsbad, Solana Beach, and Bressi Ranch (a little further off the freeway).

We have the Pizza Port in Carlsbad on our list! I was kind of intrigued by the place, it sounds interesting for sure! Thank you!
