I'm no expert, but when a person loses weight, on any type of fasting/fad dieting, you lose muscle and fat, after your fast is over, the weight that you will inevitably gain back will be mostly fat...assuming there is no strength training involved

    Exactly what I was thinking.

Plus, I like to work out and this beer fasting thing would not be good for me.

That's my general thought as well. I do fast from time to time, but it's never been with any diet/weight loss in mind. I definitely believe it has its benefits, but there are much healthier ways to attain long term weight loss and fitness goals.

Wow, man. You have some willpower. I am watching closely because I have done small fasts before, but never considered this even though I knew it had been done for many reasons. I hope it goes well. I need to lose a few and if this works and you suffer no ill effects I may have to try it. Keep it going!...

Honestly this just sounds like a fast track to an eating disorder and alcoholism... but good luck I guess.

Hell to the Yeah!!! I've thought about this. But, I wouldn't do it, 'til I researched additional factors like maintaining a safe sodium level, supplements, etc...But, I'll be watching.

As to the weight loss not being due to water; I read that if you drink a real lot of water, your body actually adjusts and holds onto less water since It is readily available. If someone does not drink a lot of water, then they hold onto more water because it is not readily available. Keep in mind alcohol also causes people to lose water. My guess is your body has adjusted to your diet by holding onto to less water, but it is likeLy you have also lost a few lbs as well.

Seven years ago, I lost 50 lbs in four months without giving up food and limiting beer. I exercised hard 7 to 10 hous a week, ate really healthy, drank a lot of water and ate small portions. If I was to do some type of fasting I would likely go with a water, fresh fruit and vegetable diet. Not sure I would ever just do beer (and yes I have read about the monks).

With all that said, do what you want and what makes you happy. Good luck.

interesting...my unscientific opinion is that there is no way it can be healthy...losing weight does not equal better health.

There are a lot better ways to lose weight and still enjoy 1-2 beers a day. Good Luck though, but your 8 lbs is most definitely either water loss or muscle loss or a combination of both.

Diets don't work. Healthy, sustainable eating plans do. If you're trying to drop a bunch of weight short-term, with the understanding that you're gonna gain it back, fine, but weight loss "schemes" are not something I recommend.
Not that it doesn't sound like fun, mind you :stuck_out_tongue:

Friar Tuck was fat, drank tons of ale, ate roasted game, fell off of log bridges, and saved Robin Hood's ass more than once, confounding the Sheriff of Nottingham. But I think he became more austere later. Good luck with your plan, but how does that beer drinking and not eating work out during the week?

I do a similar thing and stick with an all beer diet every Sunday. I'm not necessarily losing weight, but I'm not gaining any either. And I enjoy drinking just beer and water!

The intent is definitely to have exercise involved when I resume normal dieting, when I have the extra calories to burn again. I had the same worry about losing muscle and gaining fat.

I'll be honest, its getting hard. I hit a plateau last week where it got reasonably easy, but that didn't carry through to this week. I'm strongly considering limiting the length of this fast and then repeating monthly for maybe 5 days, like was described in those articles I linked.
