Isn't that pretty much what this entire thread is doing regarding Founders, who I'm pretty sure is still making a fortune as well?

Personally I'm looking forward to trying it...

Its surprising to hear that big luscious is sitting on shelves in so many places. I thought it was very good. Sold fairly quickly in my area. This release is very boring.

Dissenter and Big Luscious were grossly over priced, but if it is really $9.99 I will be all over it.Great time of year for an Imperial Red Ale.

Won't treat my wallet as kindly as last summer's Lagunitas Imperial Red, but with Red's Rye as a favorite I hope to try this. Sounds like it'll be real juicy.

There are about 4 or 5 (or possibly more) bottles of Big Luscious at my local store. If you want more, you know who to message! lol

I used to line up at stores for back stage beers. Even made some ba and Facebook friends that way. That was five years ago. Times have changed. Founders needs to understand that they are in a new world of beer and that stuff like this can get blown away by any number of local breweries in many parts of the country, both in terms of value and quality. For instance - I could get a 750 of trillium for around the $10 price point give or take a dollar or two (fort point or congress street). While I think founders makes great beers and I have yet to try this one, I think trillium is probably going to beat it for my beer money.

All that said, I'll be a raving lunatic come October and November when overpriced four pack of harvest hit the market. I'm not sure I'll ever quit that beer. And all day is a staple for me in the summer. Ive still got love for founders, but they need to recapture some of the magic they used to have in the market.

I've only read him saying he doesn't feel right about charging too far above his costs, considering the short time a batch requires. I'm inclined to take him at his word. Even if current pricing is really a secret strategy to maximize profits in the long term, my point was only that the price today is less than what the market would bear.

agree that it's kind of weak for backstage, but honestly chinook, simcoe, mosaic is an awesome hop combo. if i can find it within 2 weeks of the release, i'll get a bottle. don't forget how good stuff like double trouble is fresh.

    edit:

this pun is indeed superior to the beer name.

Not exactly what I was hoping for, but hopefully we will see a "big beer", hopefully barrel aged (c'mon, Panther Cub!) for the final release, with the colder months ahead to warm the belly.

I have to say, their taproom hoppy offerings have been great though, Cheef and Azzaca were wonderful brews, I'll definitely buy one to check it out!

I would really like to support Founder's since they are a local brewery but their pricing and formats are ridiculous. Good thing there are a bunch of other breweries in Michigan that will sell me a great beer at a fair price

You don't buy any Founder's beer because of the price of the Backstage Series beers?

I should have said "I would like to support them more". I regularly buy centennial and porter. I just feel $8 for a single of KBS and $6 for a single of devil dancer is nuts. The backstage series just makes me think their egos are out of control putting non stellar beers in bombers and jacking the price. There are plenty of other breweries making similar or better tasting stuff that don't try to squeeze every penny out of their customers. High prices don't make the beer taste any better in my opinion

If it will actually be $10 retail, I'm game. Sounds tasty, and I don't care if it's a Backstage, front, or side.

What is the Backstage Series supposed to be? This actually isn't a bad beer but at the price point it isn't going to move well here in NY. Heck, we still have Blushing Monk sitting around. There isn't a happy medium here. Either the Backstage release is some insanely hyped beer that sells out the day it arrives, or some ho-hum offering that sits on the shelf.

What are your thoughts on Bonehead Red? I hesitated in picking some up and regret it. I have heard its one of the best.

In the past, red IPAs were a pass most of the time for me. After trying some really good ones lately (Stoneface India Red, Odell Runoff Red) they have definitely grown on me. Will definitely give this a try when it gets to Mass.

If you're paying that much per bottle in Michigan for either of those, you may need to find a new store.

It feels like the Backstage Series is more about marketing than anything else. I mean, they re-released a beer from the series and there was less complaining about that than with this new one. It's their way of getting the brand out there a few times a year other than the KBS release. This one definitely seems more fairly priced than recent ones (Dissenter). Let's face it, we'll still see limited allocations when it first hit shelves just like all the others, and people will be there cash in hand waiting for it.
