Thanks for the detail. Interesting that they will fill any glass but J. Timothy's has different interpretation.

The beer menu posted on the Walrus and Carpenter website (Black Rock section of Bridgeport) suggests that all of their draft beers are available for growler fills. I haven't been in to verify this yet, nor do I know how they are doing the fills. Hopefully a line to the bottom of the growler, capped on foam at a minimum. I thought it was interesting to see a small discount on the price of a fill relative to buying an equivalent amount of the same beer by the glass. I didn't expect to see any retailers doing that. Has anyone done a fill at Walrus yet and if so, how was the experience?

I saw/asked about this before the law was passed/enacted. The answer I got is that growlers were their equivalent of a pitcher. You can order it that way only, they bring it in a growler, but it's for on premise consumption only

Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of that. Makes sense for them, I guess. I wonder if any bars in lower Fairfield County are doing "take out" fills yet.

This is correct. They've been serving beer in growlers for at least the few years that I've lived nearby. However it's for on-premise consumption only.....essentially, as mentioned, it's their "groovy" version of a pitcher.

All of the bars that do growler fills in New York sell it at a lower price than if you consumed it on premises. Usually somewhere between 2.5 and 3 pours in my experience.

    So no price info???

And WTF? Just now realizing that each place has to provide the glass. That is lame. Why do we want to be like MA? Don't we all, already complain about the MA law for branded growlers? Is there a growler factory in CT that I am missing?? (No offense to anyone living in MA, love the state, love the beers in your state, but hate the glass law.)

I did reach out to Wood-n-Tap and all of the locations will be filling growlers soon, but no word on prices or when they would start, but I find it encouraging that there are places that want to do this. I am hopeful that we can take baby steps and start doing this and then other good things will follow.

Does anyone know if Coalhouse Pizza will be filling growlers?

They definitely intend to (spoke with the owner many times about it). I do not know exactly when though. They are opening their bar area and expanding to 85 taps this week so my assumption is he wants to have that go smoothly before diving in. I am pretty sure he has already ordered growlers.

Anyone know of a southern Fairfield county spot that is doing fills now?

Cask Republic Stamford is starting today (as I posted some details on about 8 posts up - last one on first page, I believe).

I stand by my conviction that I will most likely never get a growler fill at a bar, mostly because I don't want to buy another growler (this is why I never by growlers in MA) and because of the price is probably going to be outrageous. That said, if a place convenient to me (say, Plan B, since I work in Glastonbury and live in Simsbury) has something on tap that is not convenient to me (say... Beer'd), I just might consider paying up for a growler to enjoy at home. And if I'm going to take the time to walk into Plan B and wait for a growler fill, you bet that I'm going to have a pint while I'm at it. This is probably the scenario that bar owners are looking for.

If they have any interest in selling growlers the price will not be that outrageous. Growlers in Tuckahoe charges approximately 2.5 pints per growler. Most stuff is around $20. More than a brewery would charge, but not outrageous. I would certainly rather go around the corner than drive 40 plus minutes to a brewery.

I don't know where Tuckahoe is, but I bet it's not in CT. And I'll also bet we're not going to see growlers of Beer'd at a bar for $20. But I hope I'm wrong.

I will line up for $20 growlers of Beer'd. And Tuckahoe is in NY.

Also, no one has mentioned the 4 liter limit per day. Which just means you bring friends or go to multiple places. I am thinking about football Sunday consumption with all my neighbors.

Heard some places will be doing "discounts" for off site consumption... $3 off of a $30 fill is really nothing. When I can go straight to the source for much less. The only time this helps me is when I forget To bring beer somewhere (party, ect) but even then I'll be pissed. I rarely forget to bring beer and I rarely don't have anything in the fridge. So this does nothing for me.

Tuckahoe is in NY. Not exactly a less expensive place. It was mentioned earlier in the thread that bars would be selling for less that the cost to conse on premises. I am probably not that far off here.

Two data points on pricing, neither of which are that great in my opinion.

Cask Republic Stamford - Will subtract $3 off of the normal 4 x pint price. So if something cost $6.50 a pint at the bar, the growler will be (4 x $6.50) - $3 = $23

Coalhouse Pizza - Straight math. Take your per ounce price on the menu for an in bar pour and multiply that by 64. So, the above example would be the full $26.

Picked both these up off of facebook (directly off Cask's page and off OmNom for Coalhouse).
