Sierra Nevada "Copper Penny" taste

    after having had recent examples of Ruthless Rye, Torpedo, and flagship pale ale (can), what is this new (last few years) hop flavor like my mouth is filled with copper pennies?

    No, I have never had a mouthful of copper pennies, but this somewhat best describes the flavor after having read someone else's comments here re: the same complaint.

    Long story short, it's gross.

    I can actually sort of pick that up too, now that you mention it. I bought some Torpedo recently and was not a fan, even though I liked it the only other time I had it last year.

    But seriously, I haven't noted the same flavor you are. Could it be the hops they use?

    Ive noticed that flavor before in other beers, but not from SN. Not sure what it is thought?

    I've had this flavor before in different beers (I have noticed it in the SN rye) and was always curious what caused it.

    Does he taste that flavor all month or just for a few days a month?

    I've noticed this flavor also in beers here and there. Not knowing much about off-flavors, I usually turn to John Palmer's How to Brew:
    "Metallic flavors are usually caused by unprotected metals dissolving into the wort but can also be caused by the hydrolysis of lipids in poorly stored malts. Iron and aluminum can cause metallic flavors leaching into the wort during the boil. The small amount could be considered to be nutritional if it weren't for the bad taste. Nicks and cracks ceramic coated steel pots are a common cause as are high iron levels in well water. Stainless steel pots will not contribute any metallic flavors. Aluminum pots usually won't cause metallic flavors unless the brewing water is alkaline with a pH level greater than 9. Shiny new aluminum pots will sometimes turn black when boiling water due to chlorine and carbonates in the water.
    The protective (grayish) oxides of aluminum can be enhanced by heating the clean pot in a dry oven at 250°F for about 6 hours."

    I can't imagine that SN is suffering from any of these seemingly easy to avoid QC problems, but who knows...

    I know exactly what you are talking about. Being from Nor-Cal I drank a ton of SN and I always just thought it was me. No one else ever mentioned it. No idea why that is though.

    I live east, but I get it as well. I wasn't too impressed with my Torpedo recently :slight_frown:.

    I thought it was their distinct whole cone spiciness that they impart on most of their flagship beers. It's what set them apart from the rest back in the day. This is all from what I gathered, I could be wrong ha.

    Probably has to do with the beer being aged in the stubby glass bottles. The silica for the glass is sourced from the Yucatan and contains a higher than normal amount of copper and zinc.

    It's a spiciness that hops can give off.

    Not sure if the original comment was mine in the English IPA thread?
    But you get that metallic copper hop note a lot more in Noble hop varieties, which I don't like, as it's a bit overpowering

    I find the spicy, slightly metallic hop notes in SN pretty tasty.

    You might be on to something there. A quick Google search of "metallic taste from whole cone hops" brings up a number of references to the same thing. Any input from the home brewing crowd?

    I got this in Weyerbacher's Last Chance IPA recently. Didn't really bother me but was definitely noticeable by myself and others. Never noticed it in any SN beers though.

    EDIT: Oddly enough I just googled the above phrase and Last Chance was in a few hits. I guess its the hop thing idk....

    Just tried my first bottle of Sculpin IPA that I got as an extra in a trade and I just drank it straight from the bottle and got a metallic taste from the get go, but it seemed to fade as I drank the beer (or my palate got accustomed to it)
