I put FO in the same league as VR, with differences. Both sweet, slight hoppy bitterness with FO. Fantastic nose, blahcetra, blahcetra. Different people, different opinions. What else is new? Point is, both are excellent vanilla bourbon stouts.

It's in the same tier as VR... tho I find the hype on that beer to be equally absurd tbh.

Far from a Cicerone here, but for my edification, is it there really a "slight hoppy bitterness" to FO?

Also, tried not to bump this thread, but since I am, I'll add my 2 cents. I had 1.5 pours on draft. Consensus between 3 people was that it's a irrefutably a very good beer. If grabbed 1000 bottles of beer and lined them up by flavor profile, Vanilla Rye and FO would be very close, if not next to each other. And this is coming from a BCBS fan. That said, I'll still contend that VR (and BCBS) remains the benchmark stout, especially on texture and mouthfeel.

As for trading, 6 bottles of anything is a lot. I've had two of something I liked and still traded 1 before. I expect in the future, BL won't have such high limits (if it's a similar style). That said, given the success of this beer, I expect BL (and many other breweries) to push out BBA + Vanilla stouts like crazy.

I agree. Its score is at 100 now but it was at 92-93 maybe a couple days after the no bottle limit dinner.

It was $45 at Churchills for on-premise consumption when I was there in May. Seems to me that if you actually wanted to drink it, rather than obtain "trade whalez!!11!" you'd save a lot of time and effort by skipping the release all together and just go enjoy it at the pub at a later date.

I had it at Copperversary and thought it was great and worth a strong rating (4.5+). Not sure I liked as much as VR though.

How does this compare to Darkstar November?

Well part of the score is based on the number of reviews and up to that point there really were not enough reviews.

While this doesn't exactly speak to whether or not score inflation is happening (it is), but there were 16 ratings left before the release on June 30th, the average score of which was 4.65.

I didn't go to the dinner and I didn't get any luck at the release...and still:
I had it at the Bruery party and rated it at around 4.5-4.6 as I remember. Then I had it from a bottle (thanks to another BA here) and changed my rating to full 5/5...and I rarely do that. I still want (and need to) trade for some bottles (see my ISO:FT posts lol), so I'm technically working against myself, but just wanted to show that not all the 5/5 ratings are trade-value related.

I had the same sort of experience. At the Bruery Anniversary I thought it was great but being about tick number 10 out of about 30 different beers made it hard to really give much validity to my impression. I tried a 7oz pour at the brewery and enjoyed it even more. I have no bottles and do not rate.

Sooooooo how about not posting the exact store details and causing lines before their shipment of 12 whole bottles comes in? I mean, I know sharing the shit show with others is the gift that keeps on giving, but it just seems silly to announce that a shop is going to get it like this. It's basically screaming fire in a crowded theater at this point.

On the contrary, this might keep shops honest.

I've been chasing things in the past where bevmo/wholefoods staff lie to my face and say they either didn't get it or they only have one left (keeping it all for staff) and I should bless them for the opportunity to look at a bottle. For that reason I stick to member only or ticketed releases if at all possible

Honestly I think BL is just trying to help, if your complaining about not getting a bottle then BL is at least telling you where to get one.

Are you guna sit there and tell me VR didn't ride a hype rocket of steady 5s on its release either?

This is all my opinion, but FO is a phenomenal vanilla stout and one of Californians best offerings so far this year. So why is that a reason to say it shouldn't be highly rated and people shouldn't want to trade it?

I never understood this logic of 'oh my god, best beer ever, time to cellar them all' instead of spreading the love with a great brew and getting to try some beers you ISO in the process?

I know its definitly an awesome stout, (not close to VR but thats just my opinion), but the problem lies in how much more dishonesty is attached to these releases, these people are not trying to "spread the love", they are trying to win trades, its so transparent in their actions. Especially when i see it from certain traders on here who arent exactly popular amongst their peers. But i agree there are some people who are true advocates, better people than i am atleast and they will give up all there whalez to simpy share, but i do not believe thats whats goin on here or atleast not what the majority of these traders have in mind. I believe thats the point most of us have a problem with and are trying to make, but as always just my $0.02
