The Lost Rhino Meridian Kolsch is definitely a keeper. I'm planning on getting my third growler of it soon.

I think anything that isn't a strategic mother-of-all-hop-bomb or a boozy barrel aged beer tends to be underrated. Although, I think this site tends to do better than others when it comes to rating them.

I agree on both fronts. Wasn't trying to shit on the site, that's just the way it is now. It's sad, but, I always like to think people will branch out at some point. The way a good pils or kolsch snaps on the finish is something I wish all beer drinkers can truly appreciate.

A little off base, I get a little kolsch/pils on Victory Summer Love. An 84 on the site, but, really should be a 90+.

I'm drinking one right now as a matter of fact, Sierra Nevada Kolsch German Style Ale. It's delicious.

Luckily for me, the first kolsch beers I ever had were at the source, Cologne. I hope to get back some day.

Absolutely love the kolsch style. One of my favorite styles. St. Arnolds Fancy Lawnmower is my favorite. Their Santo black kolsch is also fantastic. Others I really like are Lift and Dreamsicle by MadTree (They also have a barrel aged kolsch called JOON that is phenomenal, but I don't really consider that a kolsch, it's closer to a gin and tonic... great summer beer), 50/32 by Coast, and Gaffel Kolsch. Reissdorf was solid. Unlike others, I did not enjoy the Schafly Kolsch. I might have had a bad bottle or something? Either way, I'm glad some people like it.

I'm always on the lookout for new kolschs, so anyone that can give me suggestions of some good ones that I can easily get around my area, please point me in the right direction . The next one I have my eye on is the FFF version, Calumet Queen. I'm already making a list of kolschs from others' posts here, especially the out of town ones for when I travel. Great thread!

EDIT: Absolutely getting the Mango Kolsch once it hits in Ohio. The ratings and reviews look really good for it. Can't wait.

Love Kolsch! Uinta Brewery makes a pretty good one. It's called Hoodoo Kolsch. I am moving out of China tomorrow and going back to Utah! I am excited to enjoy the desert sun and drink a good kolsch.

The right Kolsch at the right time has proven to be amongst the best of beer experiences.

The only Kolsch I've had was Ithaca Daydreamer, and I thought it was terrible. I might retry it, though.

In the region around Cologne, Kölsch is served in small glasses (.2 l) from the tap in pubs. Waiters continuously walk among the customers carrying trays of filled glasses. If they see that your glass is empty, they immediately replace it with a full one. They keep this up until you signal you're finished drinking by putting your coaster (Bierdeckel) on top of your glass. The waiter keeps track of the tab by making a pencil mark for each glass on a slip of paper each customer keeps. If you aren't aware of the coaster custom it seems like you've turned loose the sorcerer's apprentice in a beer hall.

Sünner Kölsch is an excellent one, from germany. Also Ninkasi Wünderbeir is a good one.

Päffgen, Malzmuhle and Früh. If you've never been to Cologne you've never really tasted Kölsch. Bottled versions just aren't the same. And anything brewed outside the Cologne area by definition isn't a Kölsch. Just like you can't make a Californian wine in Spain.

Kölsch, like Helles, is a very subtle style. Though being raised in the cologne area, in my earlier beerdrinking years i hated Kölsch, I thought it was boring, and I wanted more bold styles- belgians, IPAs, and even Altbier:wink:
Nowadays I really enjoy a good, fresh, properly served Kölsch. It is a very subdued style, but when at the right moment it can hit the spot...
My favorites would be Mühlen, Zunft and Bartmanns. Hellers is nice as well. (And Zunft is not brewed in cologne, but is still officially a Kölsch)

It's a pity the Reissdorf and Gafel are the German Kolsches you get in the U.S. :slight_frown:

There are much much better Kolsches out there, they are mediocre, mass produced, massive marketing budget beers.
If you can, try Mühlen or pfaffen.

Lots of folks probably don't realize that Ballast Point Pale Ale -"the Original" is brewed Kolsch style-great this time of year.

Thanks to this board got into the style last summer. Ben drinking Kolsch off and on since than. My favorite American Kolsch in Sierra Nevada. My favorite German one (by a large margin) is Reissdorf on tap.

Assuming this is a good representative of the style, I liked it, but it didn't "speak" to me...
