Good day NBS peeps! Moved to the porch glider and some shade on a humid day. Working my way through the generous box from @JNForsyth in the NBS/BIF #2. Taking Union Craft Brewing Double Duckpin IIPA for a Sunday drive. Don't see a canning date, Abv. is listed at 8.5%.

Pours a brilliant gold color with a generous amount of white foam. Score 4.50

Aroma is grapefruit zest, some pine a bit of a floral presence. As it warms I'm getting a cheese like aroma in the background. Nothing gross, just picking up a faint hint. Score 4.25

Flavors of grapefruit rind, pine, and a bit of caramel malt in the finish. Score 4.5

Mouthfeel is fizzy and a bit oily at first, then settles down to a dry finish. There is a bit of alcohol heat present. Score 4.25

Another NBS winner for me. I don't use the word balanced often, but this was a nice mix of hop bitterness and malt sweetness. Very easy drinking despite a little alcohol bite. It complemented the Revonah sourdough hand made pretzels Jeremy included in the box of goodies. Thanks my man! All said my final score was a 4.37 / rDev+1.9%.

    Enjoy your new beer endeavors!

Had to include the model that was gracious enough to stop by for the photo shoot.

Today my dad and little sister somewhat unexpectedly came over to visit, and (as always) we went out to get some lunch. The local place we usually go to was all out of the two beers that Dad and I usually order when we're eating there (George Killian's Irish Red and Peroni) so we both ended up getting a Corona instead. Yep, I've never actually tried Corona before today. Clear bottles kinda scare me, honestly -- I'm always worried if I buy something that comes in clear bottles it will be skunked to hell and back, and I don't want to risk buying a full twelve-pack of something I've never tried (...it's gone fairly badly both times I've done it before) so getting an enclosed pack isn't really an option.

Somewhat surprisingly, our Coronas did not come with limes stuffed in the bottles. I suppose Italian restaurants don't have a lot of limes lying around, unlike a Mexican place where limes get used for a lot of things. They did come with mugs to pour them in, so of course we did.

And... despite the absence of limes, it actually wasn't bad at all. Did not seem to be skunked -- there was only a whiff of "generic beer smell" as the two Coronas were poured, nothing I'd compare to an actual skunk (and I smelled an actual skunk outside just last night, so the smell is fresh in mind and I'd definitely know it if I smelled something skunk-like in my beer.) It's very light, yeah, but there was actually a decent amount of flavor there. Dry and bready and just a bit of that grassy/can-be-mistaken-for-skunk-if-you-haven't-had-actual-skunked-beer flavor that I've come to associate with European hops. I was expecting it to be more on the sweet side, but it really didn't come across as sweet to me at all. Reminded me of a lighter Peroni more than anything else -- just a normal bready/grassy pale lager, not anything spectacular but nothing bad about it.

After finally trying one, I'm a little surprised this beer gets as much hate as it does. It's certainly not one of the greatest beers ever or anything but I couldn't find anything bad about it, either.

    Maui CoCoNut Porter

I usually put the BB date (or bottled on date) in my NBS review but this time I can't read date on the can. It's smeared, I just can't read it.

Appearance - Poured into English pint glass, very dark in a glass, it's mysterious looking as most dark black beers are. I got nice 1 finger of dark brown head with really creaming tight bubbles and some thick bubbles as well. Great looking brew!

Aroma - sweet chocolate with hints of roasted malt.

Taste - Very creamy coco and dark chocolate, roasted malts, nice pop of toasted coconut up-front but it faded pretty quick. Hint of coffee and lots of creamy brown sugary sweetness in the aftertaste that makes me feel like I'm drinking a cola that was specifically made for adults. LOL! Not sure if the coconut is lending to that sweetness or if it's just the malt build but there is a nice amount of spicy/piney hops on the backend to balance out that sweetness.

Verdict - This is a great beer, I liked it a lot! It's got the right amount of sweetness without being cloying and the mouth feel is great, MCP is so creamy and delicious. I wish it was a little bigger in the coconut taste but it's there even though you might have to dig around for it a little. The is actually my first beer from Maui Brewing Company and after trying this I will try some more from them.

    Score - 90 out of 100

A sweltering and sweet, malty Sunday to you, NBSers. In honor of my wife’s birthday, I chose for my review a bit of a sweet and decadent ride of a beer. How many of you out there like Baltic Porters? I reckon most would drink this during those bleak winter months of NWNJ, but I’ll drink against the seasons- some of you have heard me say that. Anyhoo, it’s hot and humid out there in the sleepy town of Stanhope. With my wife on the couch after a sublime birthday lunch at our favorite local five-star bistro with three-star prices, I felt the time was right. On a somewhat related issue- try oysters from British Columbia with a bottle of Edmund Fitzgerald. Great match. So, on with the show.

On the docket: Grand Imperial Porter from Amber Browar poured with oomph into my Lucifer snifter.

Aroma: A bit of raisin, chocolate, roasted malt and alcohol. Hey, it’s 8.00%... no wait, it’s 7.2%.

Deep, deep amber brown with the faintest hint of red highlights, especially at the base, espresso-tan head that sits thick and uniform on top. After it recedes, it lingers in a thin ring and gentle surface coat.

Taste mirrors smell, with chocolate, raisin, some sweet malt, and a touch of roast and bitterness. As it warms, the raisin and sweetness come out.

Feel is smooth and a little… er… foamy? Full, creamy, slick and includes enough carbonation for a slight tingle, not but really “scrubby.” Might be due to a traditional recipe that would include ale methods but lager yeast- but I’m not that much of an expert to be certain.

Overall: A good example of a Baltic Porter, and from Poland to boot. It’s enjoyable, pleasant to drink. Does it knock my socks off? No. Would I have it again—yes—especially with dark chocolate or earthy cheese, maybe bleu.

Music pairing suggestion: Polish death metal band Ghost, album The Lost of Mercy: King of Darkness

DELICIOUS beer, and one of my favorite styles, since it's sort of a hybrid. I also did a Baltic Porter this NBS, check it out.

A style that doesn't get enough love, evidenced by the recent thread. Good brewery. I also like the pilsner.

Some good beer on the site today!!
Been a ridiculous week...got some time to work on the rx7 today seems like every time I figure something out something else goes wrong:stuck_out_tongue: ....way she goes I guess.
Anyway told the fiancee to grab me something I've never had at the grocery store. She grabbed boulevard' s chocolate ale.
Not a huge chocolate beer fan last Time I tried southern tier choklat I drain poured half of it lol...I know.
Gave this a fair chance and it's not half bad! Apparently it's an American strong ale but with a with chocolate hint. And a hint it surely is....on the front end I get a somewhat boozy malty taste which fades into a almost dry cocoa powder taste which I actually like.
Smell is malty chocolatey wilth a slight bourbon smell to it.
Apparently boulevard collaborated with a chocolate maker from KC...interesting.
Overall I enjoyed it not my style and maybe not the best representative of the style but glad I tried it.

    Hope has a great sunday!

I received it in a trade recently. The date sticker says it was bottled on 01/19/2015. It was very good, but I'm honestly glad I didn't age it any further.

I love this post so much. I also reviewed a malt liquor just for the style tick, and it's one of my favorite reviews ever -- Icehouse Edge. If I were smart enough to link my review I would, but I couldn't believe how much I hated that beer, and probably that style. I think Anchor Steam is a really solid beer, I really enjoyed that one. Cheers!

    New American Black Ale Sunday

Hello again! I'm back with my second (and final) new beer for the day. I truly enjoyed this one - Dubhe from Uinta. Glad I got a six-pack and not just a single! I scored it a 4.4 (above the current average of 4.13). If you can find it - get it! I find that with this style the roast sometimes clashes with the hop bitterness, but not here. Also the high abv is very well-covered. I'm going to sit outside and enjoy another one! Have a good Sunday, all!

Great weekend slowly winding down. 53 miles (and a 2010 Black Tuesday) with @CommanderOfAwesome yesterday. Finally setting in today after having knocked out the grocery shopping by 8:30 (Trader Joes and Whole Foods are a driver, flip sand wedge from my house), full week of work lunches made (wife and I make from scratch every week) and laundry is folded and put away.
Wife laying down for a nap aka time for my beer drinking...
Scored this thanks to a truly great BA, @totalbangover . Can't even recall the number of trades we've completed and they've all been awesome.

He warned me of the sour-ness of this despite the DIPA billing (and reading the reviews echo the opinion) and while I agree, I still like this a lot.
Lots of citrus on the nose as it pours into the glass, really great color (despite the bad picture) and the foamy head coats the glass like whipped cream.
Still get the citrus on the front of the tongue but then the tartness kick in and if I wasn't warned or read reviews, I'd be like :grimacing:.
But I did know and this is enjoyable. I'd call this an Imperial Sour.
I know this is a once a year (if that) beer and were I local, I drink it annually.

    NEW BA TRIPEL
Wow its warm in Minneapolis 2day we have not been to 90 all summer so we might make it 2day...im enjoying 2 of my favorites things, Barrel Aging and a Belgian Tripel, Wooden Rooster a domestic Tripel it is BA in Rye Whiskey , this brew really took me by surprise 1st because its a BA Tripel and its worthy of some aging but mostly it is a superb brew that is in a 19.2 oz can . The BA is so sublime it compliments the fruit and hops of the tripel no way interferes it just there, the sweet candi sugar and yeast with white fruit are melded with wood and rye, a very creamy and smooth mouthfell with just the right amount of barrel presence

New American Barleywine Style Ale Sunday!

Pretty nice sunny day here in Northern Utah, around mid 80s. Took a nice little hike. This is not a new beer, but I do like it. I lost a few reviews of it on the website (too many characters) I guess. I did have a few nice brews during the week though. Will also have some new one's this week. :grinning:In a few weeks, I will start having a new beer every sunday, hopefully.:slight_smile::sunglasses::grinning:.

Michael, I took note that you stated relative to Straub Pilsner: “Maltiest of the three.” Yup, Straub Pilsner does indeed have a BIG Pilsner Malt backbone.

Last evening I went into the city (Philly) with my wife for a few beers and dinner. They had Jever available in bottles. I ordered one and it was damn tasty; it was bottled in March 2015 so only 3-4 months old: Woo-Hoo! I ordered a second Jever; when you find it fresh (which unfortunately is rare for me) you just gotta enjoy drinking Jever!!

    Cheers!

Greetings all you hop sisters and brothers from other mothers! Hope something tasty is in your flute, snifter, or nonic today. Weather in Central OH is dreary and overcast. We could definitely use some sun. I decided to pour myself some liquid sunshine and I submit this humble NBS entry for your review and approval.

    Happy NBS everyone!

    Peace, love, and malty-ness,

    Knee Deep Brewing Lupulin River

Aroma: Wonderful peach, apricot, and fresh melon aromas abound. Lots of new age American hop character. Clean fermentation presence. Powdery hop resins.

Appearance: Hazy light amber with a low white head. Effervescence noted. Head retention is good.

Flavor: Bright melon character with more peach and apricot. Balance is to the powdery and earthy hop character. Light bready background malt notes. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is resin-like stone fruit hop character.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light bodied with spritzy carbonation. No oiliness, heat, or astringency noted.

Overall impression: An innovative, fresh, and new age Double IPA. Crisp and dry with tons of American hop character. Love it! Strongly recommended.
