Just brewed my first Kolsch and ended up being my best brew by far: Efficiency, Crispness, Drinkability. Makes me want to brew more. As far as my favorite: Montepulciano Kolsch is my number one.

Can't we get an option to make those eye-roll smilies bigger when needed? :grinning:

love koelsch, like many people have said, it really does have to be tasted fresh at the source to truly appreciate it. the culture and customs around the beer and the brewpubs only go to enhance it. muehlen is definitely my favourite, but also really like paeffgen. Personally, although I understand the arguments for and against, im not a big fan of people calling their non koelsch convention brewed beer a koelsch, just doesn't sit right with me and as for all the different versions with fruit flavours, more hops, roasted malts etc, theres just no need for it. Where I am now in the uk a local brewery, thornbridge, brew a really good true to style beer that I really like and they get extra credit for calling it a "cologne style ale"

I didn't say that either. Actually, we didn't go to Köln this time.

Yup, I knew that. I closely followed your accounts in the Germany thread.

    Cheers!

And LOL at taking style guidelines so seriously.

And LOL at geographical protectionism with beers that are not spontaneously fermented.

I can brew the with the same malt, hops, yeast, and water profile in my basement than they can in koln(too lazy for umlauts)

Kölsch is an ale style, not lager.

Only seriously if a brewer is saying, "Hey -- this is my Kölsch! Never mind that I over-hopped it, used crappy malt, and brewed it to twice the ABV -- I mean, LOL -- what? me worry? After all -- if it tastes like an IPA, who out there really cares?" Unless you're looking for a Kölsch to drink.

Here we go... took this long to get into the debate.
Kölsch is a hybrid beer. It's top-fermented, but lagered a good amount of time for smoothness. There -- end debate, back to who makes good ones.

Franconia Brewing makes a good kolsch. All three of these brewes are also good.
