Love a good Kolsch. I'll agree that drinking it in Cologne is a great experience. Quite different from bottles in the US. So fresh right from the tap. Visited Cologne a few weeks ago and tried a few different ones (Peters, etc) with Paffgen being my favorite (only 1,60 euro a glass). Didn't consider topping my glass with the coaster for hours...

Bah, who wants yellow, fizzy lagers anyways. (or wait, a yellow fizzy ale...no wait....nevermind)

Whether you think Sierra Nevada's is "traditional" or not, they definitely nailed the look.

Beau's Lug Tread is solid, I also found Kilannan Kolsch to be very good.

Ethan, I drank a Sierra Nevada Kolsch last evening. I also thoroughly enjoyed drinking that beer but I had lots of thoughts like: boy, I really wish I could buy this beer by the 6-pack.

    Cheers!

That's a common wish in PA. Those PA laws always gettin' in the way of happiness. Just kidding. I'm with you. How did you like this beer in comparison to Victory's?

Well, the issue with buying a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada Kolsch is that this beer is only available in the Sierra Nevada Variety Pack; it is not available as a stand-alone beer. Believe it or not I actually purchase most of my beers in 6-packs from beer stores co-located with supermarkets (e.g., Wegmans, Whole Foods, Acme, etc.) and package stores like Capone's.

I enjoy drinking Sierra Nevada Kolsch and Victory Kuhl Kolsch. The Victory Kuhl Kolsch is principally 'defined' by the Pilsner Malt aroma/flavor with just a hint of yeast derived flavors. The Sierra Nevada Kolsch has a tad more complexity.

I have reviewed both of these beers in posts on NBS:

Thanks for the links (I was predicting that you'd supply some).
Just kidding about 6 packs. I would like to have either of those beers available year round in 6 packs.

Didn't know the SN koelsch used Simcoe. Where is the outrage!

I can't work up any outrage since when I took the time to look, they'd actually told me it was their version of a German-style beer (and I enjoy what Simcoe brings to the party). :sunglasses:

Jeff, I think the Ref will have to throw a flag here: 10 yard penalty for taunting!?!

Next thing you know, you will be accused of standing on a heap!?!

Please note my "Americanized" comment of previous. Also note (as I know others tend to jerk knees ) I comment on it being a well-made beer. After all, it's SN, how could it not be? (Here come the young pups waving the "it's past its prime" banner... 4, 3, 2...)

I had Zunft Kölsch while in Berlin and it was great. I assume freshness had something to do with it; on the other hand, despite its world-class status, Berlin is actually pretty limited for good beer - maybe it was just nice to have a brightly flavored and balanced beer as opposed to the mass-produced pilsners that are so popular.

Being an active reviewer I buy a lot of single bottles, just found this lying around up in West Virginia in an off the path store who broke up cases.

I like Schlafly Kolsch. I haven't had very many Kolschs. It's a style I would drink more of if it were more readily available.
