    don't worry - SC is getting both a shipment of draft and cans!

    If you call ahead, you'll definitely be able to get some...

    please let us know how that tasting turns out - this beer was YOUR idea! :-)

    Yes, if you read the classic style guidelines on the production side ("Designing Great Beers" by Ray Daniels is a good start, also the Classic Beer Style Series is a good source) they do say the key ingredient to porters is the use of black patent malt, whereas a stout uses roasted barley. The key difference is roasted barley is not malted at all - its just raw barley that is directly kiln-fired. It leads to a different flavor and body (starchiness) than other malts.

    Of course, American brewers over the years have taken these styles in crazy directions, so I'm sure there has been plenty of merging at this point. Regarding our beer - the 4Beans does have black patent malt, but more importantly, we based the foundation of the recipe off an authentic Baltic Porter recipe (which ancient Baltic Porters used beans as a way to boost the fermentables in the mash). That is the story from the original 3Beans - which you can watch here:

    @JackHorzempa

    yes, VT is getting both draft and cans, enjoy

    this is indeed a brand new beer, and new formulation

    damn that is one impressive collection - but are you missing the 3Beans glass? :-)

    experimented with it - but found it to be almost unnecessary because the vanilla gives subtle "oaky" characteristics to the beer. Also, the oak seemed to take the bite out of the cacao and the roasted malts, which we wanted to play out.

    I never got to try 3Beans so I am excited for this. I like Stumptown's coffee, and although I have only had two of Sixpoint's beers (Resin and the WaterWheel Impale Aler at a Phish show), I am planing on picking up some more of their beer soon.

    I'm so glad sixpoint is now in South Carolina and I won't have to trade for it this time around. Anyone have an idea of when it will be distributed?

    ...not to the same extent that stouts utilize roasted barley at least

    Never tried anything from @Sixpoint this sounds like a good one to start with.

    I assume Ohio is in the distribution footprint?

    @Sixpoint, thanks for the updates and continued responses on this and other threads. It's always great to get info straight from the source, and getting backstory or general info about a beer always makes me want to try it. I wish more breweries were active on boards. Adding vanilla to 3 Beans sounds awesome.

    Hoping to see Beast Mode come back. All of my usual shops said it sold out quickly, and I missed out. As a side note, I rarely fall for packaging or marketing ploys, but the first time I saw Resin and read the packaging, I was drawn in (not calling your packing and write up a ploy). The design of the cans and box always pulls me in. And the piney goodness of Resin. Best piney DIPA out there.

    Sixpoint mentioned the beer finder on the first page of this thread. It doesn't yet have 4beans listed but it will tell you if the regular lineup is in your area.

    Depending on where you are, beermenus.com might do the same thing. I asked the beer guy at one of my regular stores, and he said he just assumed they would be getting it along with everything else Sixpoint.

    Hmm, correct me if I'm wrong, sounds like that's the general assumption: if Sixpoint is in the area at all, 4Beans will come. I hope that's true and that it isn't limited in distribution!
