Thank you. Out of the group a lot of people put this #1 but there are a few that dispise sours.. so I just wanted to make sure there is something for them even if its like ordering a chicken burrito at a steak house

Some of their saisons and gose are pretty good (IMHO), and in the past, I think they've made a decent BA RIS (Diesel?). For some reason they don't seem to be able to make a very good IPA/DIPA, so I would recommend staying away from those.

IMHO, the gose they make aren't very sour, so your sour despising friends should be able to handle them without much difficulty. :-)

I've tried quite a few of their non-sours over the years going to Raccoon Lodge (it's more like 2:1 non-sour to sours there) and it's pretty hit or miss. I've had a good black IPA, a few good IPAs and lagers, and the saisons are generally good.

Thanks for the above advice guys. My son and I just got back from Portland and checked out several of the above listed. Hair of the Dog (excellent food too) Cascade (my favorite - love sours), The Commons, Deschutes, Bailey's Taproom (loved the digital beer board), and Burnside Brewing (had a killer meat, cheese, bread plate). Also hit up Old Ivory Brewery and Taphouse in Vancouver. I would recommend them all. BA is the best for finding beer spots while traveling!

A buddy of mine is going up to Portland tomorrow. As a Californian, is there anything I should ask him to be on the lookout for? In other words, should I ask him to pick up some beer bottles that may not be available to me in Los Angeles? Or is the selection going to be roughly similar? Thanks.

Ummmmm.... I don't know, what do you guys get down in LA?

I would recommend obvious things like HOTD stuff, Cascade, de Garde, pFriem, Logsdon, Block 15 Sticky Hands (if it's not already too late), but again, it's hard to make recommendations without having some idea of what's available in LA.

What I always recommend, is that you ask your buddy to go to one of the better bottle shops in town (Belmont Station, Beermongers, John's Market, etc.), and have your friend shop with you by phone. Another possibility would be to tell your friend what styles you prefer, and ask him/her to ask someone at Belmont Station or Beermongers (for example) to make some recommendations of some of the better local, more limited options.

    Good luck.

Or, you know, check out the list online and tell him in advance.

Note to @sittinggc: Each store will have things that the others don't, but if nothing else this is a pretty good overview of what breweries are available around town that aren't distributed in LA.

You can grab some WA beers that don't go into OR, like Bale Breaker.

Lost Abbey and Port Brewing as well. Probably some other things as well, but that (along with Bale Breaker stuff) is what stands out in my mind.

Check taplists at NW Liquid Gold, Caps n Taps (Camas), and Grapes 'n Growlers in case there's something on tap that doesn't distro to Oregon that you want.

As @beertunes said, check for Bale Breaker cans (top cutter and field 41 can be found at some grocery stores such as Fred Meyers, QFC, etc) as well as Fremont. Not a lot of other cans/bottles that make it down from the Seattle area.

Don't believe so. We definitely don't get Port, and I'm fairly certain it's the same with LA stuff.

There is a small bottle shop in downtown vancouver (cant remember the name) that had some Port and LA stuff. Think it was vintage and marked up, but first time I have seen bottles of either in this neck of the woods

It's doubtful many (or any) of the places listed will come as a surprise to locals, but these resources may be helpful for out-of-towners looking for good/great outdoor drinking. And I suppose we locals can discuss why we agree/disagree with these.

edit: Click on the titles to link to the articles. The links to both work. I'm not sure why they're not blue... they're blue when I try to edit the post.

I haven't had luck finding Port/LA anywhere south of Centralia, but by the bottle has decent selection. When I was there a few months ago, they said they were discontinuing vintage bottle sales and had limited/declining inventory at the time. Not sure if anyone else can confirm
