There seems to me to be a strange sour note to the yeasty tart that isn't balanced by any other flavor, and it has an unpleasant linger, is as best I can describe how it hits me today. There is no spicy hop character to it at all, as there is with Bud. And I do not drink light AAl, so I can't say if I would object to it as much or more or less. Had a few Coors at Jazzfest last year due to many kiosks ran out of everything else. Bud I have occasionally at bars my friends' band plays, then I refill the glass with beer I smuggle in.

LordCrabapple loves cheap lagers. He thinks they can be delicious though modest in flavour.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

It has been a while since I have had a Coors (Banquet) or Coors Light. I have no recollection of any sour notes to those beers. My recollection is that they were very light tasting beers with no 'worthy' features for me.

    Cheers!

Carling Lager is a popular AAL beer in the UK. Do you drink that beer? If so, what are your thoughts on that beer?

    Cheers!

The NY Post says the hipsters are now drinking Narragansett instead of PBR. Since hipsters seem to like AAL'S that must be a good style that only snobs dislike, and I owe it to myself to revisit them immediately. Note I do own a fedora, but I only wear it with a suit, and nonironically.

A few days ago I bought a can of Narragansett Lager since that beer was discussed favorably in this thread. In a few days I will report back on this beer.

    Cheers!

Hah ... no doubt. The cool kids are questing for Heady, the Plinys and the most prestigious barrel-ages whatevers, and we're hunting for 4-6% ABV pale lagers. :stuck_out_tongue:

After all the talk on here, I figured I owed it to the discussion to post this:

That's a craft brewery-made American adjunct lager using corn. For what it's worth, my review is here:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25622/152012/?ba=Premo88

    3.90 (rDev +13%)

Basically, the point @zid made is right if this beer is any indication. Twisted X is a solid AAL, but it's $8.16 a six-pack and not worth the extra money. Schlitz is what? Like $6-9 a 12-pack? Twisted X ultimately could be substituted for by a Schlitz and nobody would know the difference.

I'd rather drink a Victory Summer ale. And I'd pay *double* for a six-pack of Anchor's California Lager, which fortunately I don't have to do. It's not Twisted X's fault here -- it's just that the AAL may have a ceiling on how good it can be.

Had a 24 ounce Old Milwaukee last night. First time I've revisited this beer in about 28 years. It was not bad at all I gotta say. Mind you it was real cold and the temps were real feel of 312 degrees out.

As promised I bought a can of Narragansett Lager to try.

    @ShanePB @lordofthemark

Below is a description of this beer via BA:

“We brew our lager with six row malt, seedless hops, corn from Iowa, our lager strain (the same one the brewery has depended on since just after Prohibition), and the purest water from Lakes Ontario and Hemlock.

    12 IBU”

So, as we can read this beer has a very low level of bitterness (12 IBUs) which is consistent with what an AAL beer is.

I will not post a formal review but I will provide some impressions/observations.

It is straw colored like a typical AAL and it provides nice Belgian Lace as the beer was consumed. There are no perceptible off flavors so this is a well-made AAL beer. The aroma is pleasant; sweetish malt and maybe just a hint of hop aroma. The flavor is predominantly sweet malt flavor. It has a firm(er) malt backbone which is more than I can say about BMC type AAL beers. It is certainly a half-step up from BMC type beers and given the economical price provides this beer with a discriminator.

    Cheers!

Still enjoy the occasional Schlitz, High Life, Coors Banquet, and Burger.

So an AAL needs to be a Bud/Miller/Coors clone? There is much to explore with corn, and the knee jerk reaction that it lightens flavor, or is cheap, needs to be reexamined. Corn is the most traditional ingredient in US lager brewing, and used correctly, can have a positive impact on flavor. So many beer myths still kicking around.

Wow, wifey bringing the beer out on a tray for a young brotha. *sheds tear* You'll be lucky to have a chick that'll even know how to boil some water these days

I like Kokanee. That's considered an AAL, right?

I was hoping your results would be different. I don't think about it in terms of a "ceiling," but rather, economies of scale.

I'm sure @jesskidden has addressed this in the past, but I recall that Coors Banquet was at one time all-malt, or at least some claim it was? I'm not sure if that's true or just a myth, but I wondered if anyone knew for sure.

Maybe next time you are in Golden, Colorado you could visit the Coors Archive and ask that question:
