Is skunkiness considered an intended and/or acceptable feature in Saison Dupont? I had a bottle recently and it was like a nuclear blast of skunk. I didn't particularly mind it -- I actually enjoy that smell. It's just that I've never smelled it that strongly in a beer before. I assumed for it to be that intense, that it must be intended -- but from reading the reviews, it looks like a great many people don't report any skunkiness at all.

It isn't intended. They use green bottles, which skunks beer much faster than brown bottles, so it is more than likely going to happen. It is what it is.

Yeah, the bottle thing is common knowledge. But green bottle notwithstanding, I've never had a beer that was this intensely skunked. Do they store the bottles in direct sunlight at the brewery or something? I've had other beers in green bottles from this same distributor, and purchased at this same store, and I've had nary an issue with skunking before.

I am thinking Brasserie Dupont doesn't store their bottles in direct sunlight, but I dont know that for sure. Unfortunately it doesn't take much sunlight to skunk a beer in green or clear bottle, so it is always a gamble buying these beers. I doubt you will be able to find the culprit of the exposure, but good luck.

In a word, no. Skunkiness is considered a fault in beer and I can not imagine any brewery "intentionally" destroying their beer. No matter the lack of troubles from your store, I'd look there first for the source of the problem.

It's not them. Been buying from them for years -- this is my first skunked beer. The shelf they keep the saisons on is in the back of the store, and isn't even remotely close to a window. It's a problem with either Dupont and/or their local distributor.

If the bottles are coming into the store in sealed cases, it's the store (if they aren't sealed cases, the distributor is questionable in many ways). Fluorescent lights can skunk a beer almost as fast as sunlight.

This has come up a few times. Personally, i refuse to recommend that beer to customers in big bottles because of this. Email Vanberg & DeWolf, the importer, and complain.

Vav, do the big bottles come to you in sealed cases?

Yes. Do this. If you can find them. They aren't available everywhere.

im sure you can ask your store to ask the distro to stock it, if they just created a huge demand for them they would prob get the picture.

Sure do. But more importantly, the 11.2s come in 4pks in brown bottles.

Edit: And i meant what i said about complaing to the importer. I complained to the importer of Poperinge's Hommelbier for the same reason, even going so far as to reach to to the brewery. Lo and behold, when i was out at the brewery in May, i was super pleased to find out they were switching Hommel to brown glass.

The real question is why wouldn't Brasserie Dupont... just...use...brown...bottles?

Saison Dupont is a fairly hoppy saison, and with it being bottled in green bottles, Saison Dupont is well known for getting "skunky".

Isn't that the real question to any brewer using green bottles?

I say you take one for the team; the next time a case comes in, take it into a dark corner, squirrel out a bottle and rush it to an enclosed fridge, chill it and give it a try. I can't imagine it would be skunky.

Or maybe you just order the 11.2s anymore?

Skunking is never intended or acceptable.

I think you're mistaking my comments. I dont recommend the 750's because they're green bottles, i recommend the 11.2's because they're in brown bottles. If you're suggesting keeping them in the back in sealed cases all the time...well i *could* do that in theory, but it seems like a lot of space, time, and effort for something i may sell a few cases a month of.
