35 lbs, with a roughly 1 qt:lb hot liquor. Not much room to spare though. I was able to extract ~1,100 sugar points from that mash for 16 gal (post boil, 20 gal pre boil) of IPA for the Great WP Experiment.

Sorry to fool you with question... since I now know the answer.

Nice. I always wonder.. how do you create a false bottom for this? I'm guessing you had to do it custom with steel mesh?

Probably uses a bazooka screen or SS braid if I had to guess

Slotted copper, that copper is at least 20 years old. I show the slots facing upwards, but it doesn't matter which direction they face. Extraction on average is 85-90%, but that is solely due to my crush. This set up has very little dead space too, so you can get every last drop if you want.

    wow. Impressive.
I did a brew not long ago with ~20lbs grain at 1.3 or so qts/lb (I was shooting for 1.25. but needed to add more to get my temps where I wanted them) in my 48-qt cooler / manifold rig
I had a bit of room for more, but not a lot. If I ran a thicker mash, I could have gone higher (as you just proved)

1.100 OG for 16 gallons!!?? That seems incredibly efficient to me. Great job.

Oh and the question then of course becomes if you lowered your volume of boil how much more could you get out of it? :grimacing:

Maybe your sugar points terminology is throwing me off. Was your OG 1.100?

    1,100 "sugar points" / 16 gallons = 1.06875 OG

1,100 points into 16 gallons is 68.75, or 1.06975. Subtract out sugars lost in hop absorption, etc. Probably a 1.065ish IPA

Usually called "gravity points" from what I've seen.

The problem with sugar points or gravity points or just "points" is that you really need the context to decide what the writer means. People talk about, for example, an FG dropping from 1.012 to 1.010, or "two points." In reality, the total "points" dropped were (2 x the volume in gallons), or 2 points per gallon. I'm as guilty as the next guy when it comes to sloppy units. Wait, that didn't come out right.

I have misspoken numerous times then vike. Yea if I say my FG dropped 2 points I've always meant 2 SG points. You learned me something. Thanks!!

Readers of this thread should from this point on be wary of head asplosions due to units being discussed, quote marks being used, and multiple exclamation points becoming commonplace!!!
