I'm driving down to the DC area next weekend for a wedding. I'm staying at the Monaco in Old Town Alexandria and I'm looking for a great tap/bottle selection within a reasonable cab ride/public transit distance.

I know I need to check out The Church Key, but are there other bars I should keep on the radar?

I'm also looking for a decent store to pick up some bottles to bring home.

Any input is appreciated as I'm really looking forward to killing a few too many pints of Two Hearted and other deliciousness.

If you are in old town, you might as well check out PIzza Paradiso there... it may not be the best thing in the DC area but it's two blocks from your hotel, worth checking it out..

Pizza Paradiso in Old Town being in VA gets different items often than DC such as Terrapin, so it's a nice flipside once in awhile.

Rustico near old town is good for drafts its the same owner as church key. Go to ricks in Alexandria for bottles.

Rustico isn't exactly "near old town;" however, it is a short cab ride and well worth it. I believe there is a local bus line, DASH No. 4, that passes by the front door. (If you get the time, head out to Falls Church for Mad Fox Brewing.)

1.5 miles doesn't fall into the "near" range?

Another vote for Rustico, I really enjoyed that place.

Pizza Paradiso was very good when I visited a few weeks ago. As said above ... Right by your hotel. The Whole Foods in "old town" (read the quotes as not really quite old town) was pretty serviceable and has both 32 and 64 oz growler fills. I picked up some Two Hearted and a couple varieties of DC Brau to bring back with me. If you are looking to drink in e hotel, pretty good option.

Some of the Whole foods in the area have a good selection of beer. I personally think the Whole Foods in Alexandria is average. If I needed a six pack for the night its ok. But if I wanted to get a good idea of what's available in VA I would go to Rick's Wine and Gourmet. It's worth the extra 5-10 minute drive. Check out last weeks arrivals and you can get an idea of what they carry. http://rickswine.com/beer.html

If you don't want to leave OT Alexandria, Virtue Feed & Grain isn't bad - neither is Bilbo Baggins.
Both are in walking distance of the Monaco.

Hahah, yep. We are quite empty around here... ;-)

As I'm not afraid to shill my own place...Rick's is right up Duke Street, but would be a pain without a car. Quick cab ride, however. Although, a guy did come in last Tuesday, sans car, and walked back to his hotel with almost 2 cases of beer. His arms were bigger than my legs, though.

We have everything that is local to our area (that is in stock at the distributors).
