Avery is somewhat of a controversial pick with Oskar Blues and Great Divide residing in the same state. However, I personally agree with the choice. Maharaja, Tweak, and The Reverend are great beers, IMO.

I like COAST over Westbrook but there's little separating the quality of beers. COAST does an amazing job with more traditional styles while Westbrook does more with sours, funky beers, etc. Holy City can't touch either, but Coast and Westbrook are both stellar breweries. 32/50 and One Claw are among my 5 favorite beers

I've gotta be honest, I clicked so I could see what they picked over the more-deserving Stoneface (NH) and Tree House (MA) and, well, they nailed it.

I don't know if Surly's the best in our fair state, but I'm pretty sure they're not 6th. IMHO, of course.

I was really excited to see Stoneface on the list for NH and not Smuttynose. Not a knock on Smuttynose but what Stoneface has been able to do in a year and a half in business is incredible. Smuttynose is still a great beer with a great Smuttlabs program now.

Naw, Allagash takes the crown for Maine. I love MBC and BBB, but a couple of hyped IPAs does not a king make.

In my experience with MBC, their King Titus porter is the best thing they make, and I haven't had a beer that wasn't at least really good.

I wouldn't even rank Founders in my top 3 or 4

Different tastes I guess. I'm not a fan of anything from Allagash. I don't even go over there when I stop at BBB, Foundation, Austin St.

I think BBB makes more than just a couple of hyped IPA's, Luxe is a great hoppy rye.

I'm happy with Carton for NJ, but I would've been satisfied with Kane picked as well.

Funny, I went to both Stoneface and Smuttynose on Saturday. I was one of four people at Stoneface and one of probably 200 at Smuttynose. Not that attendance is the best measure of quality. Thank god tourists don't read Thrillist.

I too am usually skeptical of these lists. But a good one to use as a guideline.

Same here. Will be interesting to see what this list is like for NJ next year after Kane releases cans of Head High (and hopefully Overhead shortly after).

Also, not disagreeing with Treehouse, but personal opinion is that Trillium beats them out by a bit. Close call though.

IMO it's just another over-hopped, thin Porter.

Yeah I'm sure it's small, I just think it's an interesting situation when a beer gets to be so well-known as a fabulous beer from Wyoming but you are hard-pressed to find it in Wyoming. Although I guess you don't get to be well-known by staying in a state that is so sparsely populated. Call it blind poke pride, I guess. I just find myself thinking of what it'd be like if everyone was apeshit over heady topper, droned on non-stop about how good Vermont beer was and how proud they should be of their state's beers, but you had to go to Maine to get a glass.

At this site, as of this writing, Surly has the top 2 highest rated beers in the state, 4 of the top 5, 6 of the top 10 (with Town Hall having the other 4), 9 of the top 15, 11 of the top 20, and 14 of the top 25 (with Town Hall having 5 of the top 25). The results are similar if you use RB's list, and BeerGraphs, which uses "advanced statistics" that rely on Untappd data, has Surly as by far the highest ranked Minnesota brewery. Taste is subjective, certainly, but your peers in aggregate indicate that they consider Surly head and shoulders above the rest of the breweries in the state. Also, with the likes of Todd the Axe Man (which soon will be a huge hit on the trading forums), Blakkr, and Eight, Surly is doing some of its best brewing ever and some of the most modern and sophisticated brewing that the state of Minnesota has seen; it's definitely not resting on its laurels or stuck in the past. For the record, I consider Sisyphus, Fair State, and Fitgers better than most of the fellow Minnesota breweries you mention, although not as good as Surly.
