Rum Barrel Aged Pumking comes to mind. Keeping in mind I actually like Pumking, the smell of the RBA variant had me very excited and the let down was much larger than expected (still enjoyed the beer, but just didn't hit that 'awesome' level for me).

I haven't had either of those beers but I tend to agree with you on the session IPA's having a wonderful aroma and then are found lacking in flavor. Cheers!

Crasher In The Rye - Clown Shoes. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this beer; however, it was the best smelling beer I have ever come across.

Pretty much everything barrel-aged, they usually end up tasting way too boozy for my liking.

I think almost all beer smells better than it tastes, especially IPAs. Maybe just because most of our sense of taste is our sense of smell.

I am actually the exact opposite. I think the majority of beers I drink actually taste better than they smell. At least I notice it pretty consistently with ipas, belgians, and lagers. Wonder which one of us is the odd one:flushed: :grinning:

    Quite a few...

The thing that gets me is this always sets myself up for a big disappointment, as suddenly your expectations are often for something really good of what's hinting to come.

Often in this situation my scores are even lower for the beer I am reviewing because of it.

Just wanted to say nice avatar. I spot El Bait Shop in the background. The best bar ever, if you ask me!

I asked your mother, Dorothy Mantooth, the same question when I took her out for a nice seafood dinner.

I actually can't think of a definite "smells better than it tastes" example beer off the top of my head -- a few where it smelled different than it tasted, but usually in those cases there are things I only pick up in the taste that made up for the lack of things I only picked up in the smell.

On the other hand, I've had a lot of beers that tasted better than they smelled. Yuengling has a little bit of this "hair salon chemical" sort of smell to it that thankfully doesn't come through in the taste, for example. Foster's Ale (which I consider to be the nastiest beer I've been unlucky enough to try so far) smelled even worse than it tasted. Busch Signature was the same way, though not nearly as gross as the Foster's either in taste or (especially) smell. And it's not just beers that smell bad that end up tasting better than they smell; a lot of beers that smell really good to me end up tasting even better than they smell.

Dinner. Best smelling beer I've ever had. Tasted pretty good, but not close to how good it smelled
