Is craft beer in cans going to be the next big thing. With Sierra Nevada and Anderson valley both with canned offerings now, could it start to become much more common? And who believes this is Heady Toppers fault?

oskar blues has been canning beers since 2002. :grinning:

it just seems to be much more popular over the past few years...i'm a fan of it for certain types of beers.

It is great for going to outdoor events that do not allow bottles - I'm a fan (I recall about 10 years ago when the city I lived in had a free outdoor concert on Thursday but only allowed cans...and there were very few choices).

I haven't had anything out of a can but one of our local liquor stores just got torpedo in cans and I'll probably pick up a 4 pack though. Seems like it would keep IPA's fresher than in bottles.

What's wrong with cans other than aesthetics? I applaud brewers for canning instead of bottling for various reasons: protection against light exposure, easier to recycle, etc.

I think there is just too much attention given to this "debate." They're simply different containers that hold beer. I like more can options for sure purely because it gives me more possibilities of transporting the beer.

Nothing wrong with cans at all, I'm just looking for other opinions on the matter. Just because I say it's heady topper's fault doesn't mean it's a bad fault. I do agree with what your saying about the light protection and recycling. (my recycle bin overfills every week from the odd shaped bottles, and inability to compress them, except for the aesthetics. I like the look of a lot of cans out there, especially Heady Topper, SN's torpedo can looks really cool as well. Really excited to see what the effect in taste, if any, will be from a can, of torpedo vs. the bottle.

**Anyone think this could reduce the cost of craft beers as well? Could canning make bigger craft breweries (Ex. SN) have prices closer to yuiengling?

I just bought an Aloha Mucho and Sierra Torpedo in cans yesterday. Don't mind cans since I open them up and pour them in a glass anyway.

The question is, when will 2X4s start replacing Bombers? Two more ounces of beer with all the benefits of a can.

I recently got to do a test of Torpedo & Pale Ale in can vs bottle and there really was no difference, I guessed the Torpedo right but it was a total shot in the dark. The differences might be more notable with regards to cellaring, but more options and helping the environment both sound like a solid plus to me.

This would be great! I feel like I'm getting ripped off everytime I buy a bomber. $6 for 22oz, when I can usually get a 12oz single for under $2. Selection is never as good with the singles though.

Here in wisconsin Sprecher only sold 16 oz four packs for a while...but now some of there beer styles are offered in 24 pack cans. I like it cuz u get more of ur favorite craft plus it is cheaper. Its not mass production, its just more quantity which is never a bad thing

I'm in the land of Surly and love the cans. Great for camping, boating, parks etc... and much easier to crush and recycle as they take up much less space.

A guy from Victory was at my beer store the other weekend. I asked him about cans vs. bottles, and he said they'd love to can, but they don't have the room. I guess it's a space eater. There's a brewery here in Ashburn, VA (Lost Rhino) that has chosen cans over bottles for there product.

Austin Beerworks only produces in cans, and their stuff is excellent. Same for Southern Star, and Shiner Bock is available in cans as well. Seems to be a movement in that direction. Talked to the guys from Austin Beerworks at their open house a few weeks ago, and they think that canning actually preserves the quality of the beer better, and gives them more control over otherwise uncontrollable variables. All I know is that all of their beers are great, so they're doing something right.

Great in the summer on the beach too. Lots of places don't allow glass, and cans of Caldera IPA in the sun is always refreshing.

There's a new brewery in Seattle, Hilliard's, who has released their Saison in 16oz cans. My only complaint is that I'd rather see 12oz cans. I can hide an open 12ozer in my hand, but not a 16. BTW, WTF is a "2x4"?

The canned beer revolution was in full swing well before Heady Topper, which came out what, 5 months ago?

I dig cans, I drink a lot of Caldera IPA and Dale's.

with craft beer getting more popular everyday i think we could start seeing brewers expanding their business, as well as space, and coming out with canned lines. Seems the overall general opinion is that beer is just as good, if not better, out of a can, and like somebody else said above, if the beer tastes just as good, and is better for the environment then i'm 100% for that, if the beer tastes better i'm 200% for it.

I'll probably be taking some SN torpedo, and (if Ohio gets it) SN pale ale, to the beach. Gotta love fishing on lake Erie.
