I'm looking to tick off a few of these styles, and was wondering if anyone knows of something in these categories that I might find on LI...

American dark wheat ale - I know about Shock Top Chocolate Wheat, Two Bros Night Cat, Anchor Winter Wheat, and Peak Organic Winter Session, but none seem to be around. Any known locations or other suggestions?

Unblended lambic - I'm thinking I'm not likely to find anything... any info to the contrary?

English pale mild - I got nothin' - anyone?

English dark mild - SA Ruby Mild and GI Mild Winter would get distro here, but I don't see any around. Any other tips or recommendations?

Roggenbier - Rogue and Bear Republic make one and they both get distro here, but I'm not seeing anything anywhere at the moment...

Kvass - not likely, right? lol

Happoshu - same as the Kvass, right? :astonished:

Euro dark lager - I'm on the lookout for a Heineken Dark or a Kelso Nut Brown Lager. Anything else that fits the bill?

Thanks in advance for any tips or recommendations.

    Cheers

You could pick up a bottle of lambickx at Hicksville beer & soda to get that unblended lambic tick.

I'm at 101/104 styles ticked, spent quite a few months tracking many of these styles down...

American Dark Wheat Ale - I ticked the aforementioned Peak Organic in the winter, those should be out in the next 3-4 months.

    Unblended Lambic -
Only brand I've seen is the Lambickx another member mentioned, but I refuse to pay the high price tag on that one just for a tick.

    English Pale Mild -
Your best shot is to purchase Tallgrass Pub Ale off of France44 or a similar online beer website if you really want to tick this style. I just pooled it together with Surly stuff and other beers I wanted to try to offset the shipping.

    English Dark Mild -
You got it, SA Ruby Mild. Hopefully it will be out in the fall variety pack in the next few weeks.

    Roggenbier -
Never saw the Rogue version on shelves so just like the Tallgrass, ordered it online.

    Euro Dark Lager -
Pick up a single of the Guinness Black Lager the next time you're in a store that sells singles.

You've actually completed some of the harder styles believe it or not. As for the Kvass and Happoshu, well, if you get your hands on them please share.

Euro Dark Lager- get Czechvar Dark- it's extremely good, and qualifies for one according to BA, so win-freakin'-win baby!

English Dark Mild- next time you're across the Hudson just get some Yards Brawler, draught if possible. Another damn tasty beer, and it's stylistically spot-on to boot.

Big thanks, man - appreciate the feedback - I kinda figured about the Peak Organic and Ruby Mild - though I was willing to buy shelf turds from last year if I spotted 'em  ...I know, poor form... :stuck_out_tongue: Cheers

I had Czechvar B:Original Lager recently, but I can't recall if I saw anything else from them... I gotta figure out where I got that Czechvar - certainly gonna look for it now though - thanks - between the three I think I'll get this delicious tick  soon enough - thanks!

    Here's hoping you do!

Btw- the Czechvar label looks like this. It's listed as Budweiser Budvar Czech Dark Lager on this site, but that's because they have to call it Czechvar in the US only (guess why?).
    Listing:

Last bit of info is- don't treat it as a 'sipping beer'. It's made to be taken down by the liter; enjoy it in that manner. Na zdravi!

For the Happoshu, check the beer menus of Japanese restaurants. I just found one in the Philly area but haven't been there yet to see if they have it in stock.

For the Kvass, chedk out neighborhood Mom and Pop stores that specialize in Russian food, etc. I'm told that there are a couple of places in the Philly neighborhoods where there are a lot of Russian and Ukranian speakers living. Again I haven't confirmed this by getting a bottle, but I am assured that Kvass can be found in the Philly area.

    Great tips!
While I'm not much inclined to drive to Philly, I do love sushi, and we have plenty of Japanese restaurants around here :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks!

Don't think you'll need to leave NY to find an ethnic grocery store or a good Japanese place. :-). Good luck!

I found a kvass at a supermarket in the Bronx so I'm willing to bet you could find one somewhere in LI. If not, drive to Brighton Beach.

Not sure how far out on Long Island but this kvass was getting poured at Montauk farmer's market. If there was any alcohol I couldn't taste it. https://www.hamptonsbrine.com/kvass.html
    Tasted like pickle juice.

Out here until next week, could probably pick one up for you if you ever get to NYC...

    Tasty sauerkraut too.

I would imagine that traditional kvass made from rye bread is quite different from kvass made from sauerkraut and commercial kvass made like soda. I bet the first is the most beer-ish and the rational for it being on this site. Greywulfken, it's obviously your call to decide how far out of the box you'd count a tick for your quest. I think your best bet for something more true to form would be to find a Russian restaurant that makes their own.

Man, I feel like I'm gonna disappoint ya on this one, but I'm in it for the tick...

*rotten tomatoes thrown* :stuck_out_tongue: *chorus of boos*

    ...I know, I know... :slight_frown:

For styles I return to, I have a good palate. But at this point, the only styles I've never tried are the styles that never "spoke" to me over the past 5 years. ...But the gamer in me had to get the "ticks" once I saw how close I was...

My two surprises were Anchor Steam Beer - absolutely delicious - so full of flavor...
    [IMG] [IMG]
...and Sweet Action, a cream ale. Also way more flavorful than I expected...

So for a kvass tick? :stuck_out_tongue: lol ...If the site says its a kvass, that's good enough for me. Doesn't need to be the best, and I'm not going to pretend to be familiar with the style when I say a few words. That said, I ordered a kvass from this site, if anybody's curious: http://luxdeli.com/ - the beer plus 2-3 business day shipping came to about $9 (for a pint can).

I missed the unblended lambic , but nabbed an American dark wheat ale and a euro dark lager...

The dark wheat was Anchor Winter Wheat...
Assuming this beer's been out since Christmas 2014, it had some time on it, but lemme tell ya - drank really nice - lotsa roasty toasty dark malt flavors, suggestions of anise and molasses. Reminded me of a softer, less hoppy black ale - and smooth...

The euro dark lager I had was Guinness Black Lager, and again, lemme tell ya, it was much better than I expected. Decent light toastiness, some dark malt flavors - vague sweetness in the background - drank real easy...
I'm figuring on the next beer being either Sam Adam's Ruby Mild or Goose Island's Mild Winter - or the next Roggenbier I see - I know I've seen the Rogue's, but it musta been a while ago now... We'll see... :stuck_out_tongue:

    Cheers :sunglasses:

Yeah I don't really know anything about kvass other than the description on this site. But when I passed one I immediately thought of this thread. I did e-mail the proprietor and the one I posted has no alcohol, so I wouldn't think its really tick-worthy.

A kvass is generally considered a non-alcoholic beverage, like an O'Doul's (my "low alcohol beer" tick ) - source: http://russiapedia.rt.com/of-russian-origin/kvas/ ...and article (sounds hardcore, but isn't  lol): http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt...e-you-tough-enough-to-drink-real-russian-kvas ...And of course, the site's descriptor: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/173/

If this stuff I get is compelling, it'll trigger my quest for more. But if it's just "interesting" or "different," then...

    *tick*

Thanks, interesting reading. The one I tried sounded like the traditional stuff mentioned in the second article, although I imagine being made from rye bread or malt and wheat ingredients is the reason its been included as a beer style. It really just tasted like pickle juice, so if you enjoy sour its alright.

Not sure I can tick it off, as I don't think they are going to let me add a sauerkraut maker as a brewery in order to add this one.
