I was just wondering, how does one become a top reviewer on BA? Is there a certain number of reviews you have to post? Or is it a quality issue? Or do your scores have to be close to the average score of the beer in question?

If anyone has some advice they can offer, I'd love to hear it.

    Thanks

I would say it's a combination of the two , (quantity and quality) with different beer styles.

You mean the reviewers that show up when you sort a beer's reviews by "Top Reviewer"? That just sorts the same list by how many reviews the user has written. There's no minimum to be on the list, and nothing particularly complex or subjective about it.

Edit: As for how to be a good reviewer, I'd start by reading some of BuckeyeNation's reviews, which are descriptive, entertaining, and interesting.

Pick a beer. Sort by "top reviewer" and the reviews are ordered by the number of reviews the reviewers have written.

If you want to be come a "top reviewer" review a lot of beers. Last time I bothered to check, about 6250+ reviews would put you into competition for the top slot on the most frequently reviewed beers. However, if you can find a beer where you are the only reviewer, then you get to be the "top reviewer."

I'm at 1400 + and on most beers, I'm not the top reviewer. Just keep ticking, just keep ticking!!

    Cheers!

the "top reviewers" list is usually dominated by one ticker (I won't say the name, but it's obvious) who writes two sentences on each beer that are not very descriptive and/or helpful, so I usually scroll down a few.... buckeyenation is a good reviewer for when you are new and trying to put descriptions to flavor sensations that are hard to describe at first.

without trying to sound overly critical and just blindly answering the question... I think the state of this site has driven people away recently. the crash, the politics, the bannings, the deletion of threads. some people like it, others don't. not knowing his situation, I don't know what led him away, but when the site crashed many of the "old guard" went elsewhere.

I mean, I visit here a lot less frequently, too, unfortunately. patience only holds out for so long, even when you want to support a site/company/community. Hopefully, when everything gets back up to speed the community will again reach the potential it can be.

and hopefully my thoughts on the matter don't earn me a "time out" or "banning" as I feel I was just answering the question and honestly critiquing the causes of what may have happened.

I'm still here. I have gone through some major changes in my life in the past 2 years and reviewing beer was one of the casualties. No, I've never come anywhere close to alcoholism if that's what some of you are wondering. I may dabble with a few reviews in the future (yet to be determined). I poured my heart and soul into craft beer and this site for a lot of years. It makes me feel good that some of you still remember me and find my contributions useful.

I find the site hard to navigate now. And I'm not sure why my picture of my cat Cap'n Crunch (R.I.P.) no longer shows up on my profile. The biggest mystery is why my reviews no longer show up when 'top reviewers' is selected. They're still here on the site, but it would be nice if they were easily accessible.

I know exactly what you mean. I've really lost a lot of the feeling of being part of a community since the site changes were made. No beer mugs. No beerguides. No updates to the directories since no one seems to be managing them now. Hopefully the talked-about site renovatioin will bring back a bit of feeling included.

I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one who's starting to question things on this site.

I am at 3054 reviews (no duplicates as far as I know) and there are about 20 reviewers with more than me. It takes time and following this protocol will get you there.

According to Todd here, there's a bug in the site that prevents your reviews from showing up under "top reviewers" for some reason, but they haven't yet fixed it. It's a pity; your reviews are all fantastic

I was just looking through one of my reviews and noticed a few typos. I fixed them and... voila... I am now showing up when 'top reviewers' is clicked. Imagine that.

Great news. I have missed being able to find your write-ups while in the bottle shop.

Welcome back. Don't be a stranger.

    *cheers*

You do realize that this website is, primarily, a place to enter beer reviews, right?

And you realize that the aggregate scores, letter grades, rAvg, rDev values, and the subsequent lists that this website then generates by searching through those numbers (which are based on those reviews) that many of us (I can speak at least for myself) find so useful when standing in the bottleshop, with 5 beers in our carton and just trying to find a little *inspiration* for something new to try for that 6th spot, is all made possible because people write reviews, right?

Serious question, and I'm not trying to pick a fight: why do you come to BeerAdvocate.com if not to use any of the tools/lists that this website is able to generate based on the *communities* reviews?

How are you seeing how many reviews you have? I have not been able to figure out how to see my stats since the rebirth.
