Since its vacation time and beer time I thought I would throw another out there. Grabbed a growler today went I hit Proclamation.
PROCLAMATION DARK SPROUT A dark hoppy session beer.

Poured from the growler a murky brown liquid with almost no head and and little to no lacing. Looks very similar to weak cold coffee.

The aroma is the king on this beer. Piney citrus that hits hard. The look and smell just don't seem to match .....highly unusual.

The taste is flavorful hops (Citra, Simcoe, Cascade) citrus fruits with pine and a touch of cocoa. There is also a sour note to this beer. The flavor is mouth filling and tasty for a session. The brewer was not there and I asked about the sour note and they were not sure. Not saying this is a sour by any means its just that their sours have been outstanding so I'm wondering why this could be...?

Body is very thin with a high carbonation that finishes dry and highly drinkable. This is one you could definitely put down a few.

A nice and unusual session ale that vaguely reminds me of a session I had at Austin Street in Portland - minus the touch of dark malt. An unusual beer for sure but I think that's why it's so damn interesting. Proclamation has made a statement with all their beers that they re not going to follow the pack. They're wild, they're Brett , they're sour and unusual. Even with Derivative their Galaxy Pale Ale they mke fun of themselves on the label for being too close to the norm.
I like that! Cheers all. Enjoy your week.[IMG]

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend. Thanks to @utopiajane for getting us started off today. I finally cleared out all of my fermenters yesterday, bottled up my 4 gallon batch of bourbon/oak aged american barleywine that I brewed about 9 months ago. It had been sitting on oak for 6 months. I got 40 bottles of it; and I also added a half pack of dry yeast to the bucket to make sure it carbonates. The rack off was completely crystal clear with hard packed yeast on the bottom, so it was probably necessary.

Tasting notes from last night: Light-moderate grapefruit, tangerine, citrus rind, and pine hop flavors; with caramel, toffee, toast, vanilla, oak, bourbon, and brown sugar. Some lighter notes of raisin/prune fruitiness in the background. Fair amount of pine bitterness; but nothing too strong or astringent(I bittered it with good restraint, I really didn't want anything crazy 100+IBU stuff). Medium-full bodied; not too thick, ended at 1.020. Overall pretty well balanced right now. The booziness has certainly improved now since I first sampled it into secondary. I am sure there will be some improvements with some bottle conditioning, but it is very impressive right now. I want to do English yeast next time for sure, though I am sure the dark fruit prominence I want will appear with more time. The beer is very similar to many of the well known California american barleywines, which was my initial goal.

Other secondary was a 5.5% tart cherry mead. I used 6 lbs total cherries and it is balanced between cherry and honey flavors. I backsweetened with 2.5 lbs honey right into the keg. I will definitely use more fruit next time. I wasn't sure what to expect as I have never used fruit before, so I just did the old beer rule of thumb of 1 lb/gal for cherries. I got it on force carb right now.

I was supposed to brew a Galaxy/Falconers Flight red ale today, but I ended up sleeping in, so I will do it next weekend. I need to buy some immersion coil heaters to speed up my brew day anyway, so I will order those and hope they show up this week. Stove tops suck for full boils.

    Here are today's new beers:

This is a really delicious dunkelweizen. This had impressive head retention and nice lacing. Aromas and flavors of banana, bubblegum, clove, pear, apple, caramel, wheat, toast, brown bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, and some herbal hops. Light herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with very well balanced malt and yeast ester flavors. Very smooth with moderate bready wheat creaminess in the mouthfeel. Good robustness of flavors all around. No complaints at all. Spot on to style. 4
    [IMG]

A very good pale ale. Aromas and flavors of tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy hop earthiness. Aromas came off a bit weak, but pleasant and balanced. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with a nice balance of malt flavors with good overall hop forward character. Very smooth with a moderate resinous/sticky mouthfeel with slight creaminess. This was very tasty and enjoyable. I bought a 6 pack on impulse today and it will be enjoyed for sure. After having a lot of their hop odyssey series lately, I have recently picked up on a "house character" that has been prevalent in all of them. I think it is related to their base malt, because there is always a unique and identical toasty character in pretty much all of their IPAs. Wonder what their base malt is. 3.78
    [IMG]

Really damn nice White IPA. Aromas and flavors of big mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, banana, pear, apple, coriander, clove, pepper, wheat, cracker, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Balanced amount of herbal bitterness/yeast spice on the finish. Great all around balance and complexity between yeast, hops, spice, and pale malt flavors. Very smooth drinking with light hops stickiness and wheat creaminess in the mouthfeel. No complaints at all. The series has been very consistently good-great so far. Look forward to the next rendition. 4

Hello again NBS. Yes, I'm pushing it here, at 10:30 pm, but I wanted to toss in 1 more this time. 2 beers in 1 day - possibly a first for me. But it's been one of the days that makes you actually look forward to returning to work on Monday...no? No one? Ok, maybe that was an overstatement. But at any rate, I've already popped the cork, so might as well enjoy. Cheers!

    Review

2015 version clocking in at 11.9%. Was saving for something special, but eh. Served from the bottle at ~52*F.

Poured into a Boulevard Tank 7 tulip. Pours medium brown, very reminiscent of Jack Daniels. Settles a deep ruby-red in the glass with only a thin skirt of tan lacing on top. Very good carbonation. Huge wiskey nose on this, along with caramel, oak sap, leather, and sugared candy - cloyingly sweet aroma. Incredibly sticky, syrupy mouthfeel and possesses a medium-heavy body. Soft but vibrant notes of whiskey on the taste with blended caramel, molasses, and oak. Incredibly smooth from start to finish. The aftertaste is sweet booze with a touch of charred wood.

I had this beer once before at a beer fest (4 oz. serving), and it's just as delicious as I remember. This is pushing the limits of sweetness for me, but I still enjoy it. There's a slight booziness but nothing unmanagable. I wish I would've aged it a little longer to mute the alcohol, but that would've in turn potentially made it taste even sweeter. Decisions. Either way, an awesome BA beer.

Something new to me and quite good, a morning eye opener for sure:

Black pour with dark khaki foam; thick lacing; good cap and carbonation. 4.50

Strong roasted coffee bean aroma; a little chocolate malt as liquid warms. 4.25

Toasted malt and strong espresso flavor up front; bittersweet dark chocolate malt with a little vanilla on the exhale; dark stone fruit(cherry)middle; decidedly coffee finish. 4.75

Medium lite mouthfeel; slight stickiness as it opens up, but overall a smooth tongue coating. 4.25

Overall, coffee from top to bottom; an outstanding "breakfast" stout! 4.5

    Happy Sunday all you NBSers
We had wonderful summer weather this weekend and I got a chance to give my kids a great weekend.

To go with the summer weather I had 2 great beers that paired up nicely with the sunshine.

The first was Lawson's Super Session #2.
It's a session IPA so it is light in body but heavy on the citrus hop bite. I've downed 3 of these since this NBS started.
    Here's my review.

The second new beer today is Professor Fritz Briem 1809 Berliner Weisse.
Great tartness and so refreshing. It really paired well with the sirloin and cod that I grilled for dinner.

The sound track for most of today was Jim O'Rourke's new album "Simple Songs"
While not a new artist he is very new to me. I've been listening to this quite a bit. It is kinda like a really good barrel aged stout-dense, enjoyable and you taste something different in each sip.

I am hoping to check in with another new one a little bit later.
