How would you describe the flavor profile of your single hopped Equinox beer?

    Cheers!

Simcoe or Citra. You don't need to use either of them early to obtain desired bitterness either.

Lots of good options, but another vote for EKG, especially with a marris otter base

I just did a Simcoe Smash beer. The first few days in the keg it was a weird, strange, tonguebiting bitter mess but after a week it's really starting to come around.

Nelson, Mosaic, and Citra would be my picks for a SMASH. I've got one with Azacca fermenting right now.

I got a very dank citrus and tropical flavor with hints of sticky pine and fresh ripe green pepper. Some don't like the green pepper and focus on it instead of the other great qualities...I find it adds a little something different and makes the hop stand out.

I haven't been impressed with single hop Azacca brews I've done, never felt it gave the flavor and aroma that the descriptors claim. I find it stands out a little better when used with other hops to bring out the descriptors more.

I've only had one commercial Azacca single hop that actually gave the appropriate descriptors, Azzacamundo IPA from Alameda Brewing in Portland Oregon. Very juicy tropical fruit with slight pineapple and citrus undertones.

Have you brewed using Azacca with another hop? If so, what were your results?

    Cheers!

I'm on a beercation and don't have my brew journal with me to confirm the amounts and times but I did an Azacca heavy IPA with a little Warrior, Columbus and Buzz Bullet that turned out really well. I got the tropical I was looking for with a little citrus and soft white grapes to round it out. I was actually doing a "clean out the freezer" brew to use up some hops before they aged too long and was pleasantly surprised!

I'd have to agree here. The only single hop pale ale that I've brewed was all cascade and it was damn tasty.

A single hop saison with Czech Saaz is another good one. You get some nice earthy, spicy flavors from them if you shoot for 30-40 IBUs

One of the best well-balaced beers I've ever made was a SMaSH made with Marris Otter, New Zealand grown Hallertauer Hersbrucker, and S-04

Hey @machalel...what's your favorite southern hemisphere hop for a single hop IPA/hoppy pale ale? I'm a big fan of Galaxy and Nelson, but curious what your side of the planet likes. Had several New Zealand brews at the Oregon Brew Festival last week and really enjoyed a Nelson heavy pale ale called Sauvinova from Tuatara Brewery

To be honest, I haven't tried too many single-hop beers, but out of the "minimal hop variety" ones that I have, I definitely rate Galaxy and Nelson, although Nelson can be a bit hit-and-miss sometimes depending on the beer style. Some other ones that I have tried and liked in other homebrewer's beers are Ella (Noble aspects), Vic Secret (Piney & Earthy), Motueka (Lemon/Lime & Tropical). I've heard good things about Pacifica (Orange marmalade), Enigma, and Topaz.

I love Pacifica. It combines the orange marmalade notes of EKG with the bright herbal qualities of Hallertau Mittelfruh, but much more assertive on both counts. Not like Citra levels of assertive, but around Centennial.

citra is my go to. I like nelson by itself, but only in a sour and in copious dryhop amounts....

it's impossible to go wrong with cascade, unless you're using the dish detergent instead of hops.

GP is probably the best overall smash malt, tho Munich is not to be scoffed at. :sunglasses:
