Not everyone's favorite, but I thought this was a fantastic brew. (Enjoyed following a 4-mile walk with the dog in 88-degree heat this afternoon, so my opinion might be somewhat biased as a result.) Too bad we can't get this around these parts.

Nice. All these BP posts have me really jonesing for some. Can't get it in the land of bizarre alcohol rules (TN). Good thing I'm traveling this weekend :grinning:

    Done! time now for.....

    Throwback Thursday Throwdown #2

Last week I did porters, even though I was initially thinking about using Dale's Pale Ale for a comparison; I just wasn't sure what beers I would compare it with. Grabbed what I thought was a good one this past weekend, Blue Mountain Full Nelson. But out of the corner of my eye, I also saw a new beer for me, O'Connor Brewing Norfolk Canyon pale ale.
Dales dated 6/11, Full Nelson best by 10/2015, O'Connor no discernable date (so Dale's likely the freshest)

    Look:
Dale's head billowed the most of the 3 beers that had almost the same color (O'Connor seemed a tad lighter). O'Connor head actually lasted the longest, though. Surprised almost no head from Full Nelson.
    Nose:
Dale's has a grainy note to it (still learning to discern malts), but also a light bitter note, herbal to woody in nature.
O'Connor seems more like a British pale ale in nature, a floral to herbal bitterness with a note of metal (my fallback description for English style ales). The Full Nelson let me down again, with hardly any nose, but maybe a hint of floral notes if I strain a bit. None of the beers jumped up and slapped you in the face, to be sure.
    Taste:
The Dale's taste follows its nose to start with. Grain start a little granola nutty, then a piney or almost grapefruit rind-like bitterness ends the taste. Initial sips didn't seem as generally hoppy as later tastes (cold versus warmer, no shock).
The O'Connor Norfolk Canyon malt had a light sweetness to in, honey to light caramel. The English bitter reminiscent hop profile starts early, but but never completely overtakes the sweeter notes, which come back in the end.
The Blue Mountain Full Nelson is the most balanced throughout, and actually seems to be right between the two. It's a little sweeter up front than the Dale's, but not quite as much as the O'Connor. The O'Connor and Dale's bring the hops earlier and stronger, respectively. Full Nelson never gets too bitter, and its balancing flavor is sort of fruity in nature.
    Feel:
The flavor strength is lightest in Full Nelson, strongest in Dale's. Dale's seems the most effervescent, O'Connor the smoothest.

Dale's has to win out in this competition, and was actually a little more balanced than I thought it would be. The Full Nelson didn't seem as powerful as I recalled it in the past, and had some category problems, but was still a nice, balanced beer. I didn't know Norfolk Canyon would be an English style pale, but I am glad I grabbed it as a comparison (look at the lacing sheet). I was actually mildly impressed by the beer, even though it's not a style I am probably going to enjoy over others.

    Cheers all!!

(Edit: the GF, who helped me drinking these 3 beers after enjoying her favorite beer - see top of post - rated them: Dale's, Full Nelson, Norfolk Canyon)
