Hey folks, I'll be in Alpharetta on August 28-30 for a wedding, and looking for good spots to grab a beer anda decent bottle shop to grab some things I can't get at home. The places page for Alparetta looks pretty sparse; and breweries in town I should make a point to hit, or bars that carry a wide selection of locals? If not, what would be the closest bar/brewery and bottle shop to frequent?

Jekyll Brewing and Hop Alley Brewpub in Alpharetta, and Ale Yeah! in Roswell for bottles.

Thanks. We are a wedding party, everyone pretty seriously into beer, so those sound perfect for Friday night, post rehearsal dinner beers. I'm guessing we will also do lunch and bottle shopping Sunday; does Georgia also not allow Sunday sales until noon?

Yikes, 20 miles away, in the opposite direction of home. Probably not unless this really is the closest thing.

We have a location in Alpharetta, exit 10 on 400. Do not go to Westside or the Prado locations!
    Sunday sales at 12:30.

We also have lots of barrel aged bottles, but--you gotta drink em at our brewpub. GA laws suck.

No, we only have our beers on tap and our barrel aged bottles, sorry. Hop Alley has some locals on tap along with their beers. Ale yeah will have lots of taps of locals for growler fills.

Ah, didn't realize you were a brewery as well. Excellent!

Can we bring our own growlers, or must they be from the establishment?

As long as you have the government label any growler can be filled at a growler/bottle shop (Ale Yeah). You can't fill growlers at a brewpub, again terrible beer laws in GA. We and Hop Alley are brewpubs. You can fill growlers at a brewery "tour" though.

I would hit either us or Hop Alley for good food/beers in house. Hit Ale Yeah for bottle/cans sells and growlers. Hit Burnt Hickory, Jekyll, others for brewery "tour" sells to go--72 oz. max at a brewery. Wierd hours check into that as well.

Sorry for the confusion--yeah, it sucks for us too.

Understood...NC is no picnic for small breweries either, but we're not quite that crazy.

The cool thing about 5 Seasons are their Cellar Dwellers, tapped on the 5th of every month. I realize you're coming in late August, but they tend to last for a while. Also, they tap a cask on Thursdays. The last one I tried was a tobacco smoked porter that was phenomenal.

@HopDawg03, does Alpharetta do these, too? (It's been a while, and I tend to frequent Westside.) The rules concerning on-premise consumption of bottles suck, but they are totally worth it if you have a group. Especially those Black Beauties.

The liquor laws are though. I was in Asheville and that business of restaurants being required to buy liquor at a liquor store and put a label on it to prove said purchase is absurd. All in all I don't care since it doesn't apply to brews

That tobacco smoked glass with the molasses porter was great! Yes, we do cellar dwellar and casks at both locations. We just bottled black beauty aged in jamaican rum barrels. It has about 4 more weeks of bottle conditioning and then will be ready "Island Beauty". It is honestly one of the best rum BA beers I've ever had! Seriously, no lie. Tasted amazing out of the barrel, can't wait to taste it bottle conditioned. When I return from Florida next week we are bottling black beauty aged in Jack Daniels barrels. Also, our port and madiera barrel saisons are fire. They just got done bottle conditioning and are ready for purchase.

5 Seasons is great, you definitely couldn't go wrong there. Another one of my favorites is Cherry Street, just a bit north of Alpharetta in Cumming. They are a brewpub but have a unique setup where the taproom is connected to but separate from the restaurant. They have a ton of taps and keep a great variety on at all times.

Jekyll makes some good beers but they cater to the "everyman" crowd. If you are pretty serious about beer they're not likely to have a lot that will be exciting to you. I've only had a couple beers from Hop Alley and unfortunately one was pretty flawed so I can't give a great opinion there, the food at both Hop Alley and 5 Seasons is awesome.

If they make good beers, I'm interested. Nothing wrong with DIPAs and barrel aged stouts, but I don't consider them the only exciting beer. Looks like Jekyll makes a well-received Kolsch, if so that's plenty "exciting" given how many American brewers botch them.
