    Hi, Pacific BAers,

I am traveling to LA this week in business and will be staying at the Westin Bonaventure downtown (corner of S. Figueroa and 4th). My sense of geography in LA is terrible, and I wonder if anyone familiar with that part of the city could offer advice on where to drink and shop.

I see BUZZ wine beer shop listed as one place for retail. Any thoughts about that one or whether I could do better? As for drinking, a few places seem to be nearby, but Sunset Beer seems to leap to the top. I'm less interested in brewery tours this time, as I'll be limited to a couple hours here and there. But I'm down for bars and retail as time permits.

The kicker: I'm not going to have a car this time out. So, I'm limited to walking (I'm good for two miles or so in each direction), cabs, and public transit--all as time permits. I know, I know, you really need a car in LA, but it is what it is.

Did a search and this thread seemed most relevant (http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/la-beer-guidance.78317/#post-1123228), but it's now several years old. I'd be grateful or any up-to-date information and practical tips anyone can offer.

    Thanks in advance!

Ramirez beverage center is a $10 uber ride away, and the melody lounge in Chinatown always has a good tap.

In my hood. Sunset beer isn't terribly far from the hotel. You can take an uber and it'll be about $5-10, same as Ramirez Liquor (just opposite sides of downtown). Buzz is a decent shop, it's a bit pricier thanks to their rent costs, but they have a lot of stuff. Follow them on FB to see if anything special comes in.

In DTLA itself, near your hotel there are a number of bars in walking distance. City Tavern, Barrel Down, 6th street tavern are all within a few minutes walk. They all have decent stuff on tap. City Tavern really skews local if that's what you want to try.

If you want to subway, which is pretty convenient from your hotel, Stone is right off the gold line, about a 30 minute ride. Highland park brewery is about a mile from a subway stop as well so a quick uber.

Feel free to message me, I work in DTLA. Be happy to show you around if I'm available.

Don't we have a "traveling to LA" thread like the SD one?

Uber and Lyft. You'll be fine without a car. If you end up going to Sunset Beer Co. you can walk to Mohawk Bend for beer and food.

Little Tokyo and the Arts District are both a short Lyft/Uber/cab ride away as well. Little Bear, Wurstkuche, and Far Bar are all good stops (and are all in walking distance of each other). Angel City Brewing is right there too, and has a taproom.

This is all extremely useful information. Thanks so much everyone! I wasn't really sure about the beer scene in downtown LA, but it looks like I'll have no shortage of good options.

To be clear, many of the places suggested aren't in DTLA. You'll want to map this all out yourself to see the geographical spread.

This is true and a good idea but this is LA and everything is a drive away. Uber, etc will handle the rest.

Agreed, but it's good to know what one can realistically accomplish in a specific time period.

You can board the red line at Pershing Square and head west to Blue Plams, as 3SH33tS said.

Or you can head east on the red line to Union Station, transfer to the gold line, and ride to Pasadena. Deboard at the Del Mar station and walk 20 feet to the Stone company store. Then walk two blocks north to Lucky Baldwins. Downtown to Pasadena should take about 30 minutes each way.

definitely get Lyft or Uber. it's usually half as much as a cab, faster, and easier

Buzz is a bit overpriced. Sunset Beer and Ramirez are good shops. Sunset is also a great place to chill and have a beer, and like DCLA said, close to Mohawk Bend, which is an upper calibre beer bar of all CA beer (and usually one out of state beer) http://mohawk.la/beer/

Not mentioned yet.. Barbara's At The Brewery. Admittedly their prices are about a dollar too high, on average, for a pour. But the atmosphere is great. It's a nice hidden gem in Downtown and never too crowded http://www.barbarasatthebrewery.com

I know it isn't popular, but Angel City has a cool taproom. It isn't that great in terms of beer, everything is just about average. If the space had better beer it would be perfect.

I agree with hopping on the red line to Blue Palms Very easy ride, and you are a few blocks away on both stops. And it is cheaper than uber.

Since you're at the Westin Bonaventure.. check out the bar/restaurant on the 4th floor(if I'm not mistaken). Its supposed to be the Bonaventure Brewing Company and they should have a few of their beers on tap. Their not well known at all but check it out since you're staying there.

Also about two blocks away from the Westin is Bunker Hill Bar & Grille. They have a decent craft beer selection and some pretty good food
