Not available in Dover. I saw singles at State Line at around 10 months of age. I shed a tear when I saw it. I didn't even bother to remember the price.

I will say I can find Gaffel Kolsch here within six months at $10.99. I found a sixer at 3 months in June. Lots of military here in Dover who spent time in Germany so some German beers have decent turnover.

I would not have purchased the 6-month old Gaffel but I would have jumped on the 3 month old 6-pack.

A beer bar local to me conducted a "Kolsch weekend" a couple of weekends ago. The were able to get very fresh kegs of: Gaffel, Fruh, Reisdorff, Sunner and Sunner Unfiltered (labeled as Kellerbier in Germany). All five of those beer were tasty but my favorite was the Sunner Unfiltered Kolsch; I ordered several glasses of that beer.

    Cheers!

The big kick in the nuts is I can buy Gaffel in Dover but I couldn't in Schonenberg-Kubelberg, Germany. That was the town I lived in. It was about two hours from Koln.

My two summer lagers from Eu are Stiegl Pils and Jever--I keep a few of those for myself on a hot day and for my friends that prefer light lager. Grab it out of the new case when it shows up locally--kept in the box on the floor.

As @nc41 says, locally, hard to beat 2 week old Captain Jack Pils from OMB or any other lager or alt they make.

I've yet to see a bottle that was less than 9 months old. Can't remember if I've ever seen it on draft.

Did you ever mailorder (do you remember that word?) beer? It seems like that was one way that Tony (@boddhitree) would get the beers he wanted that were not sold locally at beer retailers.

    Cheers!

I've had Jever on draft in Brooklyn and thought it was fantastic. A few weeks later I went to my local distributor and asked what the most recent shipment of German pilsner's he got in was. He said Jever so I bought it but it was super super skunked. Absolutely disgusting. Haven't tasted a skunked beer in years.

The only place I've seen this awesome pils around these parts is in bars in NYC... for $8 a bottle. Best pils I've ever had though.

I don't remember the word, but I know what you are referring to. I would just buy local and the few craft German Brewers that would come to Ramstein. The local beer was good and traveling even just 2 hours would provide a treat. Sort of like leaving DE to Philly for a whole new experience. I could also drive 30 minutes to France for different beers 60 minutes to Luxembourg for more choices and 90 minutes to Belgium for even more.

As much as I think Jever is a great Pils, I rarely see it fresh on shelves any more and what I do see is very old. Add to that a usual $11 per six-pack price and a $13 12-pack of Trumer really makes choices easier.

What was the "best by" date on the bottles? I contacted Rothaus when these first hit the US, and they replied that the "best by" dates were 6 months from bottling.

My prediction: in about a year (or so) the best by dates of Rothaus Pils imported to the US will have a best by tineframe greater than 6 months. With pricing on the level of $15.99 per 6-pack there will be a need to manage beer sitting on shelves.

Of course an alternative decision could be the lower the prices to something like $10.99 so that people will buy Rothaus Pils.

My bet is on my original prediction of extended best by timeframes.

    Cheers!

Needs to go back to 47 IBUs. Or more. Those missing 12 IBUs make a huge difference.

Do you personally refuse to drink contemporary Jever since it hopped in the mid-30s IBUs?

    Cheers!

I don't remember to be honest. This was back in the spring.

It's pretty good if you want something bland and refreshing. I drank a fresh one in Bremen and it's not drastically different, really. You could find it almost anywhere too.

Once I tasted the 'new' de-hopped Jever I knew I was wasting my time. So yes.

The IBUs of Jever seem a mistery to me. Where do the 30IBUs claims come from? Are they backed up by anything?
The brewery itself and people who have been analyzing it for the last 20 years claim that it has and still is up to 40 IBU.

Drinking it fresh, yeah, it seems kind of bitter, still, but first of all, I'm not the biggest fan of intense noble hops and pilsners, and second, even compared to many more bitter franconian Kellerbiere it seems kind of "tame".

If you recall their names or the breweries, I'd be interested to know which Franconian beers you're thinking of.

St. Georgenbräu Buttenheim Kellerbier, Murmann Kellerbier, Löwenbräu Buttenheim ungespundetes Lagerbier were my first thoughts- mind though, I'm speaknig about drinking them at the source. And I know, in those beers, the hop character is quite different to Jever, making a comparison somehow futile. Still, I would not be surprised if their IBUs would be in the same range of Jever.

I've had that Löwenbräu from gravity cask in the US. It was really great despite the fact that one can tell that such beers are not in tip top shape over here. Wish I could have more.
