Everyone knows I'm a Roundabout fanboy and all, but I seriously doubt Steve would put out a batch of the berliner that had a butyric acid taste in there - considering his background is in brewery quality control, has a master's in chemistry, the highest compliment he's given his beer has been "I kinda like this one", and he's told me about quite a few batches of beers that he's dumped because he hasn't liked how they've turned out.

I know @jagoffyinzer has said in the past that brewer's are the hardest judges of their beers and I'm pretty sure the same can be said of Steve as well.

I never once blamed Steve for putting the product out there, and he's definitely the most knowledgeable Brewer in Pgh. I just don't get how saying one beer is bad is an attack at a Brewer or brewery. Besides Hill Farmstead and New Glarus, I don't think I've ever
experienced a Brewer that didn't make something bad from time to time. It's the ones who accept mediocrity or less consistanly with the "we'll gettem next time" approach that I don't support. There's way too much good beer around these parts to be wasting money on poor product.

totally. And I'm not saying you did that. I think everyone is getting arguments confused. Whatvever. And I also agree on the NG and HF thing. I had the Apple Ale for the first time the other day and even that was fantastic. (they recalled their Berliner last year cause of over carbonation and in spite of the Rayon Vert mountain of head, it was awesome as well.)

They definitely make some awesome beers. What amazes me the most is all of the different German styles they do so well, ones that I'm generally not a fan of, but they turn out awesome for the style, yet still remaining true to the style.

What do you all suggest I do in Philly other than go to Tired Hands and Forest & Main? Not planning on going to Monk's.

I used to think sour stouts were cool...but I've grown weary of them over the past couple years. Will still probably check this out if it's easy to come by...

This getting bottled (and sold at a normal price)?

I honestly haven't had a ton of Sour Stouts (other than Tart of Darkness, which i love). What ones have you tried and not liked?

They were just brewing it this week so they haven't announced the plans. I was thinking it will be a normal price at Draai Laag and double price at Caliente's

Off the top of my head, I really enjoyed the the first batches of the Guillemot beers from Tired Hands...but then revisited them again recently and wasn't as impressed...also liked Brewery Vivant's sour stout - Tart Side of the Moon maybe?? I thought SARA's Ron Chavez and Love's Armour were pretty decent too.

I can't drink more than a few sips of Tart of Darkness...just way over the top.

But I just don't think stouts are worth souring...the novelty has worn off for me, much in the same way it has for Black IPAs...

Also not super into the sour stout thing. In fact, most sour/tart dark beers. Doesnt work for me.

After trying a few dark sours / saisons, I have determined that I will seek them out about as much as I seek out Dark IPAs / hoppy beers.....not at all.

Sure, I have had some dark sours or IPAs that have been okay, but most are not. And none are better than lighter-colored examples of each style.
