Sorry for misunderstanding. I don't see a lot of these beers hitting the boards FT which I think in a round about way hurts their ISO trade value if that makes sense? Most people I know that scoop those Calendar releases end up drinking/sharing them.

I like trying new beer, but I just leave that for when I travel, even though I don't do as much of that these days, either.

Trading is too expensive and the payoff isn't there often enough for me to justify.

Don't get me wrong, I used to trade a lot, but it got old. I have at least 600 trades since 2005, but very few the last several years.

It's so good I'd rather drink it too. A lot of times I send it to regular trading partners before trying it then once I've tried it I wish I had them all back! I see oro going the way of black maple. In 6 months it will be really hard to trade for.

i think that since toppling Goliath has released kbbs and mornin delight, arguably the two best stouts of all time, that gives them the potential for anything they put out to be amazing. Jackie o's is slowly climbing the ladder to becoming one of the best breweries out there IMO. I would drink oro, black maple, Dynamo hum ect all day any day and never trade again if I had enough of it. Just wait till they barrel age oro and it obtains assassin status.

I might be wrong, but I don't think anything from Ohio will ever achieve the status you suggest. My reasoning might be hard to articulate in a forum, and I think some of the best beer in the country is brewed right here, but outside factors influence hype and desirability. And let me also say, never achieving that isn't a bad thing in my opinion, and may be an advantage.

I can see why you might think that but Jackie O's is known throughout the beer community and even across the World. They have already done collaborations with Hill Farmstead, most of the great brewers in Ohio among numerous others.

I have said it before a few times, but I have been far more impressed with local (easy to get) beers in Ohio than almost all the "whales" I have traded for and received... I don't really feel the need to trade anymore unless in person and minus all the shipping costs and such.

Ohio is certainly one of the best as far as ipas go but really lacking in other styles imo. I'm sore the abv limit has a lot to do with that

Way more to it than that. Just to be clear, Jackie O's is as good as anybody, but their rep isn't ever getting to that level, imo.

Why does a stout need to be 12% ABV or higher to be excellent? It doesn't. Honestly, 8% or so is the sweet spot I think for a delicious, well balanced stout. Have not been a big fan of many over 10%, let alone the 12% cap or whatever. I highly doubt that is an issue.

If anything I would rather Jackie O's be more like New Glarus.

Why do we need to be the over hyped whalesbro mess that comes with Side Project, Toppling Goliath, etc...?

If you have the extra $$$ to trade beers then you have enough money to make the trip to a brewery. I promise you will have a better time than lubing up on the trade forums

Definitely agree with you here. I would like to see the abv law go away, if only to see what @beace could do with it, but really don't need it to happen to be satisfied

Is it bad that I have never heard of Side Project?

To your point, I could have made 3-4(or more) trips out of the country with all the money I wasted on trades. Drinking on location is better in every way.

Stouts in Ohio are second to just about nobody. The sours, stouts, farmhouse, Belgian styles coming out of Rivertown, the beers of Rockmill, Jackie O's, Hoof Hearted, Warped Wing, Toxic Brew, FatHeads, Hoppin' Frog, North High Brewing, Rheingeist, 50W... Outstanding styes and beers!

The lower trade value of Jackie O's beers means they are easier for us Ohioans to get. I haven't traded in a couple months, and it does annoy me at times that their beers aren't valued as high as I think they should be, but at the end of the day, I'd much rather drink Jackie O's beers instead of having to give up a teste to land one bottle, just to trade it away for a whale.

I know this might sound weird, but another thing you need to take into consideration in the Jackie O's vs. Toppling Goliath trade value debate is the sheer amount of people trading. Ohio has the 7th largest population in the US and Iowa is 30th. There are a ton more people trading beers in OH than IA. The scarcity of a beer is most likely going to raise the hype and with their track record of producing great stouts, I'm not surprised.

I'm just glad that of ALL places, my brother decided to move to Iowa about 7 years ago. :grinning:

Perceptions are fickle but with the success in the GABF the past five years of Ohio breweries - Columbus Brewing (Bodhi, Creeper) Weasel Boy gold for their RIS, Fat Heads, JAFB; the press for White Rajah... the huge following of Jackie O's bottle program, perceptions have changed and will continue to evolve. Rick Armon has some great info - always!
    http://ohiocraftbeer.org/
The May issue ofAll About Beer Magazinefeatures a rundown of theBeverage Tasting Institute’s“Best Beers for the Year 2013.” And three Ohio brewers have beers rated among the best in the world.

“Every beer listed is worth seeking out as a top example of the style,” the magazine says.

    Here’s the breakdown of the Ohio beers cited, along with the rating (out of 100);

    • Porter:Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter (93). It was the top-ranked porter.

    • Imperial Stout:Thirsty Dog Siberian Night Imperial Stout (94) and Great Lakes Blackout Stout (94).

    • Winter Ale:Elevator Winter Warmer Spiced Holiday Ale (93). It was the top-rated winter ale.

    • Barley Wine:Elevator Bourbon Barrel Barleywine (97). It was the top-rated barley wine.

    • Barrel-Aged Ale:Elevator Horny Goat Barrel-Aged Porter (93), Elevator Angry Goat Barrel-Aged Nut Brown (92) and Thirsty Dog Wulver Wee Heavy Ale Aged in Bourbon Barrels (91).

    • American-Style Pale Ale:Elevator Bear Ass Pale Ale (90).

    • India Pale Ale:Elevator Three Frogs India Pale Ale (95).

    • English-Style Brown Ale:Elevator Dirty Dick’s Nut Brown Ale (95). It was the top-rated.

    • Scottish Ale:Thirsty Dog Twisted Kilt (91).

    • American-Style Wheat Ale:Elevator Big Vic Imperial Mogabi Wheat IPA (91).

    • Fruit Beer:Thirsty Dog Raspberry Ale (91).

    • Marzen/Octoberfest:Elevator Oktoberfest 1810 (93).

The Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago works like this: Brewers must pay $150 per beer to be reviewed or $300 for three beers. The beers are rated on a scale of 0 to 100. Obviously, not all brewers enter.
