I haven't been to Portland or San Diego in years but it would be very difficult to imagine a place better for a pedestrian beer tour than Asheville. Just a blurying array of options. Insanity.

Asheville, NC. I'm literally in the car right now returning from 2 weeks there. Once you're downtown you can easily hit these 10 breweries on foot: Asheville Brewing Co., Burial, Catawba, Funkatorium (Wicked Weed's sour spot), Green Man, One World, The LAB, Thirsty Monk, Twin Leaf and Wicked Weed (mostly non-sours). Great beer bars: Thirsty Monk, Barley's, Jack of the Wood, etc. Great beer stores (can also drink in-store): Bruisin' Ales and Thirsty. Other great breweries near downtown, requiring very short drive: French Broad, Highland and Wedge; also Appalachian Vintners for bottle shop and beer bar. On top of all that the city has a very laid back and eccentric vibe with very friendly people. It's the perfect place to go to escape.

The free zone in Portland is kaput.

Jeez Alberta. I'd think Pacific Northwest, Seattle, Portland etc, and I'd rent a car.

Too bad. Still Portland is a great place for brews. I can still catch the bus to Horse Brass.

The new Sierra Nevada venue is waaaaayyyy out by the airport and impossible to get without a car. Hope the Brew Bus can get out there, perhaps.

Chicago is the probably the easiest city to navigate the public transportation system. Along with plentiful craft bars and beautiful scenery!

Denver, IMHO. I stayed downtown and was able to walk to six excellent breweries during a three day/two night stay.

Asheville IMO. Park the car at the hotel downtown and walk to great beer bars and breweries. Depending on your consumption level, 3 days of great drinking.

A fair few votes for Chicago. I must admit, it wasn't on my shortlist. Any particular area you guys can recommend staying to get the most out of it?

I'm hoping wherever I go will be reasonably walk friendly.

If you're going to Asheville, Sierra Nevada is the least of your worries. Burial, Wicked Weed, Green Man, Highland, and many others right in town.
