Given that Stout BIF is coming into round 5, I personally don't think it's unreasonable to expect a high level of experience or at least a strong commitment to join into it. Most if not all of the boxes that get sent in this BIF are of a FAR greater quality/quantity than they were back in round 1, or than they are in most other BIFs.

With that said, to avoid being 'exclusionary', perhaps the better thing to do is to just adjust the "minimums" to match actual expectations, rather than use "standard minimums" that people outright ignore. Instead of "144oz of 85+", make it "320oz of 90+ with at least 100oz of limited or brewery only"; I don't think I saw any boxes below that anyway.

There'll still certainly be people that go way above that, but then at least we can avoid a situation where someone actually sends 144oz and it's all in the mid-80s.

I might have to start pre shopping to make sure I can fill this requirement before I actually sign up but have been wanting to do a stout BIF for a while

Newbie BIF is a really cool idea, probably something a lot of prospective BIF participants will get into without being intimidated. I wouldn't necessarily make it a specific pre-req for newbies for Stout BIF round 5, but positive history and a previous BIF or veteran sponsor as is often the case.

I also don't think it's unreasonable to expect a high level of commitment from round 5 and maybe tweaking the requirements a bit is in order, but give several categories or options for participation? Just a thought but maybe something like:
    200oz of 92+ with at least 72oz one-time release or brewery-only
    or
    250oz of 90+ with at least 48oz one-time release or brewery-only
    or
    300oz of 88+ with at least 48oz one-time release or brewery-only

Just a thought, not set on those numbers but it keeps it fairly flexible and like previously mentioned, most folks are gonna blow it out of the park anyway.

I get where you're coming from, and I was thinking something similar since some people would rather go quantity over quality, but I think it'd be confusing to have more than one set of requirements like that. I'd rather pick something in the middle, 250oz of 90+ (instead of 320) rather than require so much 92+, or lower the requirement (for the core of the box) to only 88.

Just my 2c, and regardless of the exact requirements in the end, we definitely do need to bring them more in line with actual expectations. Were someone to send exactly the required volume, all at the minimum rating, and as a group we'd think that person "cheaped out", that's the fault of the minimums as much as it is that person.

Definitely valid. I just threw out my numbers somewhat arbitrarily as a starting point but I think your idea of landing in the middle somewhere is probably spot-on.
