I grabbed a 4 pack of White Birch DIPA (9.2% abv) yesterday for $6.79 just North of Boston (will be happy to name the liquor store if that's kosher). They had a whole display of them so it wasn't just an errantly labeled pack in the fridge, and the bottled on date was late July so they're very fresh.

Sad to say, it wasn't very good, so I'm wondering about why it was so cheap. Did the liquor store misprice them? Is it a not-so-great batch and WB is just trying to move them? Is it a cheap intro price for the 4 pack format?

Be curious what people think and whether they've seen these prices elsewhere. And to expand on why I didn't think they were very good: they had very little nose, a practically non-existent head, very "flat" flavor, and did not hide their 9% ABV very well. I'm a big fan of WB's Berlinner Weiss line so I was disappointed I didn't like this more, especially at that price point.

I've had the WB DIPA on tap a couple times and thought it was pretty good (not spectacular). Never had it from a bottle/can.

I should have mentioned that I'm fairly sure I've had it in the bomber format once before and remember it being "pretty good" as well. I also remember it being like $7 for the bomber so that made the 4 pack price seem even stranger.

    Similar issue.

I saw Horny Goat Black Vanilla IPA for a similar price, and I was too apprehensive to try it (because the price seemed too low and the style seemed too weird)

The White Birch cans have been priced pretty aggressively low, so I doubt it is a mistake. Of course, it takes so long for beer stuff to get approved in NH that the Double IPA cans from WB in NH are available in MA before NH.

The only White Birch hoppy beer I have ever been particularly fond of was "Emily" (at least I think that was the name) that was done a couple years ago by one of their apprentice brewers. I have not had the DIPA in a long time but I thought the growler I had was a total malt bomb (and that is not a good thing to my tastes....).

I was gonna say, White Birch Berliner cans are $5 for a 6-pack in NH. Refreshingly cheap.

Wow, the Berliner cans are consistently $9 or $10 down here in MA and I thought *that* was a very fair price. Good deal for you NH folks!

Maybe they feel like the DIPA market down here is too competitive to price them at a premium whereas they have the canned Berlinner Weiss market largely to themselves.

I think that's a typo or store error. That's below cost to stores. Usually on shelves for ~$8-9

Where in NH as I'm minutes from the brewery and it's $9 there and at most beer stores in the area.
But there 6th Anniversary DDH DIPA IMO is a solid DDH DIPA and another well done beer from White Birch.

Yes there regular DIPA is very malt forward IMO and is not something I really care for either but there 6th Anniversary DDH DIPA was a real step forward for them and I would hope to see more of this beer.

Wow. That's a hell of a deal. I'm so used to hearing about my stuff being priced way beyond my hopes. So a few points for the thread:

    1. The MSRP of our DIPA 12oz four packs is 7.99. I'd like to be able to enforce that but I can only set my price to distribution. The rest I have no legal ability to influence. My guess here is that the store runs a markup much lower than the area stores. These prices are not below wholesale

    2. The bomber is $7, the 4 pack is 7.99? Yes. The goal eventually is to go to six packs in cans. The reason for the price difference is twofold. I can get my costs for packaging lower on 12oz than 22's. I have also seen more people buy our 12 oz lines faster than 22's. Due to scale and volume, I'm able to make what I need and give our fans a great beer at a great price which will not be out of line when we eventually get to six packs. Seems fairer to me than going for a $13 four pack.

    3. No, this is not a bad batch. Yes I read your posts that my DIPA is maltier than the forum posters here like. That's fine. Your thoughts on style preferences and pricing are different than my pricing strategy. We all know the stores that will close out out of seasonal beers or beers leaving the market for 30% off the original retail price. This is not that situation. When I first sold Belgian Style Pale ale in MA it retailed for $13 I believe. It's now $5. No one I know misses the old prices.

    4. Yes, we are still in business. We celebrated six years of brewing. It's been quite a year this past year too. We put in a canning line, a 30 barrel brewhouse and more. We had quite a sixth anniversary party here too. Sorry you missed the fun. If you do visit the store you'll see we're in the midst of remodeling the front of our building as we need more room for finished product storage prior to our weekly shipments. The store may get a little more cozy but that 20 gallon system I started the business with and the 7 barrel mash paddle I used for years will still be on display.

    5. The interesting point I see here is one I'm starting to hear more of. It's the newer to the market craft beer store running a 10-25% markup on craft beer or less. Not much for customer service, just a basic blanket pricing strategy extremely low as compared to the market.

So in summary, thanks for your posts. I always appreciate a good conversation about beer. if you have any questions though you're more than welcome to hit me up on facebook or [email protected]. I'm there more than here.

Thanks for all the info Bill. I hope the fact that I'm a big fan of WB in general wasn't outshined by the fact that I didn't happen to care too much for the DIPA. That $7.99 MSRP is impressive and explains what seemed like left field pricing in the Boston area.

I had wondered whether you guys underwent an expansion recently because it seemed like stores went from having a bomber or 2 of the Raspberry Berliner to having six packs of all three styles almost overnight. While I might not buy much more of the DIPA the Berliners are a staple in my fridge. Best wishes for continued success!

Thanks meefmoff. I appreciate that you enjoy our berliners. We have grown a lot. I've not made a big deal of it as it's just the next step in our evolution.

I make a wide range of beers here and it's always interesting in what people enjoy versus do not. I've always approached it with a perspective of if you like what we're doing in one or more of our lines, great. If you tried it and you don't that's fine too. That to me is the fun of trying and sharing beers with friends.

There's room for a lot of beer preferences beyond the one most popular of that day and I think that's the beauty of craft beer.

Hope you have a great weekend. Cheers

When I had the DIPA last year i thought it was very good. Traditional DIPA. Now that it's $7 for 4. I will be buying more. This is such a smart move. With the market flooded price make a difference. Especially when tast profiles are so similar.

I moved across the Charles from Cambridge to JP this past winter, and began finding White Birch on-tap pretty regularly with my new neighborhood. As the summer rolled around, it seemed that every other bar on the Boston side of the river has one of WB's Berliners on-tap. I'm not sure if it was my new neighborhood, the warm weather, or the expansion at WB, but I've been very happy to much more regularly find White Birch on-tap and in 6-packs lately.
