Beers you don't "get".

    Van Steenberge Piraat. Highly overrated, too alcoholic beer which is hard to finish. Having regard to my mad love of belgian beers, this one was quite disappointing.

    Smoked beers, barrel aged, and sours are the ones that I don't really get yet. Probably because I have not tried very many of them. I suspect that the more I try, the better chance I will have of finding ones that I like.

    Too many to name. Off the top of my head:

    Lunch (as average as average gets)
    Pseudo Sue (it was pretty weak)
    Zombie Dust (yes, it's a good beer but I've had many other pales I'd reach for first)
    deGarde Stone Bu (offensively sour, far too sour for the style)
    Trillium that I've had thus far (more fruit juice than beer, lacking in any bitterness)

    I think it's sort of disingenuous to write it off as "the latest craze." Sour beer has been around longer than non-sour beer because we did not have the ability to isolate Sacchromyces before. Cantillon, Drie Fonteinen, Hanssens, Lindemans, Rodenbach, etc. have been crafting sour beer for decades, and the lambic tradition is centuries old. The point is to create something palatable and full of unique terroir (since they are spontaneously fermented) out of "faults" in other beer styles. Now, I can definitely see that sourness and funkiness (particularly of the cheesy or barnyard variety) not appealing to many, but it's not new nor are they faults. It's about brewer's intent, and that is what makes them not faults. Obviously if you don't like them, you don't like them, and there's nothing wrong with that.

    I'm curious, do you like sourness/tartness in other things like food, candy, or other beverages?

    While I've not had Dinner or Lunch, the Maine beers have done nothing for me.

    From a general perspective, IPAs, all of them, with or without a D or a T in front of them. Despite scads of evidence that some people really do like them, despite over a decade of trying them and always having the same experience, I just cannot identify any characteristics to them beyond "this is an impenetrable wall of perfume / Pine-Sol / compost pile runoff juice". I've even tried fairly fresh Habanero Sculpin, and was unable to register heat or spice behind the floral perfume wall.

    The same applies to amber ales, red ales that don't include the word "Irish", a significant amount of brown ales, quite a few saisons (if the label mentions dry hopping or anything similar, it's an automatic no-go), and some stouts. Though there are quite a few stouts at 70+ IBU that seem to have enough malt and gravity to push the hops into the background, which are tasty. I'm also not a fan of kale or broccoli, and I spit out the little paper "supertaster" test pretty darn quickly, so there's that.

    From a brewery perspective, Three Floyds. Robert the Bruce is a decent Scotch ale, and also literally the only beer from Three Floyds I have ever had that I've enjoyed. I haven't had Dark Lord, but based on everything else of theirs I have tried, I'm not in the market for any. I also do not get the sheer volume of love for Sierra Nevada - I like Narwhal, and I liked Tumbler before it's effective demise. Everything else of theirs I have ever tried has been a drain pour due to factors from the general perspective portion of this post, including beers ostensibly billed and labeled as styles which are not hoppy (looking at you, Kellerweis and Vienna).

    But people love that stuff, so I'll be over in the dimly-lit corner with my doppelbock, saying "Prost". :grinning:

    Ballast Point Sculpin. Wasn't too impressed with it. Also Mac&Jacks African Amber was a let down. Good but as good as its hyped up to be

    I realize I am probably in the minority but I feel like these types of threads are specifically made so people can come in and choose a beer that kind of proves that they are above the level of the average beer drinker. A person can come in and bash all Stone Beers and then stick out their chest and define their pallet more refined than the brewer but also more importantly, to the masses.

    I agree, love Mosaic hops but cannot drink Chillwave. Everyone's taste buds are different. Also agree on Two Hearted Ale,

    Oh damn, I'm with you. I can't do that beer.

    Double Trouble. Bitter in all the wrong ways and no character.

    I'll add Maine Beer Co. I've been hard on them lately, but 7.99 for a 500 ml of IPA that no longer blows me away. Yeah, no thanks.
