I really thought the 15 minute post edit window was nice on the old forum. It gave you enough time to edit mistakes, but short enough that you could not eventually change your opinion or make yourself look right when having an online argument. (Internet is serious business after all)

Anyway to change that feature so editing a post closes after 15 minutes?

I personally like the ability to edit, for several reasons. One, I think many discussions turned from discussions, to debates, to arguments, because of miss communication (though this will still happen, but perhaps less so)

I'm sure you saw threads as I did that would go on and on while one person was trying to convey to another person "what I really meant was", or " I can see how it read that way, but what I was saying was..." or "oops hit enter too fast and now can't go back and edit, so my comment makes no sense ." and so on, think you get my point.

It also aligns with how you can edit your beer reviews, place reviews indefinitely too. Personally, I'm less concerned with being right, to actually being able to communicate effectively, and being able to edit helps with that. Will some people abuse that to flip things around, sure, but it's an even playing field, so both sides can do that.

I don't think it's an issue, as long as there's a way for people to see when a post was edited. I assume the time stamp on the bottom of each post will update if/when someone makes an edit.

If reddit can have (more or less) civilized discussion with editable posts on a forum with millions of users, I think we can handle it here...

I think it needs to be addressed. When you "Edit" your post the time stamp currently does not change. This could be very troublesome in, for example, a LIF where guesses could be edited without anyone knowing.

Ouch. I just edited my previous post to test, and you're right. That's a troubling oversight that needs to be looked into.

I don't like the lack of an editing time window. 15 minutes seemed about right. I realize that it's not necessary for civil conversation, but it could easily lead to confusion or even be used maliciously, as ShanePB pointed out, in LIFs or similar.

In real life, once you say something you can't go back later and change it. I like it when forums are the same way.

The default/current window to edit is 5 mins. And the timestamp doesn't change (just like it didn't change with the old forums when you edited your post); if it did your post would essentially be out of order; and there's no last edited timestamp being tracked either.

That's not true. I can edit my posts from last week...

Easy fix to the LIF issue would be for the person who starts the LIF to sign up for email updates on the thread, that way they get a new email every time someone new answers.

True, but that would require them to check every single time a new post is made to see what they wrote the first time around. Unless the e-mail update shows their post, does it?

Not necessarily. Just don't delete the emails until the LIF is over with. Most LIFs get what, 60-100 replies or so? Just create a separate folder for BA emails and clear it out when someone guesses correctly.

Also, the time-stamp didn't change on the old site either.

You're right. My bad. I was looking at editing personal conversations. Posts are unlimited by default. Changing that to 15 mins right now. Thanks.

That was my question, does the e-mail have what they wrote? If so, that makes sense. Though I shouldn't have to rely on my e-mail to properly run a LIF. The forums should be able to take care of that, in my opinion.

Right, but it was a 15 minute editing window! Not unlimited

Perfect, that will solve the headaches. Thanks Todd.

Just noticed the 15 minute time frame. I was hoping to use the top post to reference all of the info that was discussed in the rest of the thread. Any way to do that or am I screwed here?
