I think seeking out and traveling for a beer is worth it if you have never had the beer and really want it. I have enjoyed the hyped up beers I went after (KBS and Dark Lord this year), but with KBS I wont hunt it down anymore. If I see it, great I'll buy it, but no reason to fight over it.

Really enjoyed Dark Lord though and will go after more when the time comes.

Like I said, its worth doing once at least.

There are those moments, when you're in an incredibly good beer store, with tons of great beer just sitting there, and you notice the customer with a list on a piece of paper asking the employee if he has: "Heady, Pliny, KBS, Black Note..." (and he's reading the long list in such a way that it's clear that he's not very familiar with what he's asking for). After the 100th "No, sorry, don't have that," you politely throw in the comment that "There's lots of great beer right here if you don't find anything on your list" and the employee tries to point him to some alternatives. Sites like this one are partially responsible for people walking into stores with lists like that when they are just starting to explore beer. If there are posts that attempt to balance out this perspective, it's not a terrible thing.

Totally agree --this mirrored my journey. And while I am sure I am in the minority it doesn't help seeing threads about "What Glassware to bring on my Vacation" to really make one cynical. The day I worry about what glass to pack on my vacation is the day I stop drinking beer. And the Cicerone stuff is beyond me but to each their own. There is a reason I drink beer and not wine.

I totally agree with you and miketd too. I feel like craft beer is becoming a parody of itself. It's actually comical now how stuffy, stiff, and serious a lot of beer guys have become and it's very off-putting to me. The glassware example is perfect.

Can we at least be dicks to the people trying to trade their whole cellar for Mornin' Delight? Please?

Sorry. I only drink Super Duper Quadruple Olive Oil Barrel Aged Peach Mango Pineapple infused IPA's no more than ten minutes after it was brewed by a guy who had an ironic beard before it was cool.

There is no way to generalize about the group around here. I think that the various diversities keep everyone on an even keel. Sheer geographic truths from many quarters makes us all smarter. There are all kinds of snobs and I have no problem with that. It's like everything in life. My son is a man of few words and I've always been outspoken. My Son is like my Dad and I am glad for that! Things move on along and beer is hardly worth worrying too much about.

jds16Am I supposed to know what CCK is? There are a lot of breweries out there, and I don't have time to memorize that many abbreviations. That's the kind of shit that makes people like me (who'll spend way more than $8 on a beer!) roll their eyes at the whale hunters and asshats who assume that all the rest of us know every farmer in Vermont just like they do.
All the asinine acronyms piss me off too." BBABLHUFD is better with some age on it." Fuck off. Just use whole words, it doesn't take that much longer. That's been building for a while. I feel better now.

You nailed it! (i cant quote on my phone)

A lot of it is sour grapes (read Aesop: these people are the fox). People that don't have the time, money or connections to get rare releases label them "over-hyped" when they've never tasted them. I consider myself a beer aficionado not a "snob" similarly to how my friend considers himself a "weapons enthusiasts" not a "gun nut". If you are going to apply the appellation" snob" to yourself you're asking for ridicule. But if I can afford a Ferrari and you can't, callinf me an idiotfor spending that much money on a car when you wish you had one, well we'reri ght back to my first sentence.

Oh please. Beer isn't some ultra exclusive delicacy that only the top 1% can afford to partake in.

The idea that "people are just jealous of our connections" is exactly what has caused the "reverse snobbery". When we're talking "don't have the money and connections", holy cow, what more proof do we need that beer has gotten way out of hand?
