So - going to open a 2008 - 2012 vertical this December at an annual tasting I do with a small group of friends. I know this one is near impossible, but does anyone (local) have one they would want to bring to said tasting? I believe there will be lots of fine beers opened in addition to the vert...maybe an 06 - 11 Abyss vert, King Henry and Rare to name a few.

Just throwing this out there - I know it's early, but wanted to throw some feelers out there.

    Cheers guys!!

If someone still has one, it can't be drinkable anymore can it?

I am sure the rarity makes up for lack of carbonation.

Had one last Darkness Day. It's the best in the series. Super roasty and completely different than any of the other vintages.

Seriously, why would it be and or undrinkable? You guys are kidding right?

I definitely wouldn't just assume that it's undrinkable, but I wouldn't be surprised in the least if it turned out to be a shell of its former self. 5 years is a lot of years for almost every style of beer. At that age, rarity trumps everything else.

2007 Darkness by Surly Brewing Co. is the best vintage. (my opinion)

I just said I had a bottle with a few people last year. Its definitely drinkable.

Five years isn't that much time. Several of us just opened an '07 Abyss a few weeks ago, it was phenomenal. At five years a lot of things are just hitting their stride.
Also recently opened an '07 Cuvee Rene; five years improved this one so much.

Five years can do great things to certain beers, no doubt. I'm just saying that at that age I become somewhat weary. Lambics and the like are certainly exceptions to this, that's why I wrote "almost every style." I'm not saying that I think all 5 year old stouts are garbage, not at all. I just feel as though, at that age, I'll do some research before jumping the gun. Cheers!

It's definitely drinkable. I had one last October, and have another I'd like to open at a similar function. But, I don't think it is improving. Drink 'em up, folks!

Woah! Inbox explosion! Let's shut this one down.

Kidding. Also, I should have also said an '06 growler would be cool too

Seriously though - I know a bunch of people that had this last year and loved it, so it hasn't fallen off the cliff....yet. i just wasn't a chosen one invited to experience the 07 experience and would love to try it with the other vintages. I could offer my cellar and wouldn't get close to trading for one, so I thought I would try it this way.

    Cheers guys and gals!!!

I drank my 07's in 07. T'was the hoppiest stout ever.

Hopefully 5 years isnt the fall off point for stouts-I have four bottles of Expo from Dec. '05. Tried one earlier this year and was pretty darn good.

I only have '08 on, and this is a beer that is much better fresh in my opinion...so I still don't know what to do with the bottles I have.
No need to BM me, I'll find somewhere to put it :grinning:
