Good morning all. My opening act is one I'm shocked to have never had before

    Anchor Brewing Anchor IPA

Floral nose with hints of berries tailing off into the biscuity malt presence

Initial swig brings sweetness while the subsequent pulls allow the bitterness to be more dominant.

On that sweetness I mentioned, we've got plenty happening. For starters it's berries followed by what I can best describe as maple syrup. Quite honestly the only thing that separates this from tasting a lot like a Baltic Porter is the bitterness that has the good sense to hold off long enough to allow for enjoying the rest of the flavors before an earthy, slightly tart tongue battering takes place.

Medium bodied with carbonation a plenty. Only a hint of sweetness lingers on an otherwise bitter tongue.

Not like most typical IPAs I've had, as this seems more complex by far.

Anchor Brotherhood Steam Beer has a profoundly thick, foamy, cream-colored head, heavy lacing left behind on the glass, and a fairly clear, bubbly, amber appearance. Aroma is of caramel, some citrus, and bread crust. Taste is of those elements, along with a quite bitter hop finish. Mouthfeel is medium and slick, and Anchor Brotherhood Steam Beer finishes on the dry side and moderately drinkable.

Good morning fellow NBS'ers! I hope everyone has been well. Non-stop in my neck of the woods between work and family, this is the first time in a couple weeks I've actually had the time to simply sit down and review a beer without interruption. It's nice. This time around, I've got a local offering from (possibly) my favorite brewery: Country Boy Brewing out of Lexington, KY. These guys are just hard working folks who love beer and love pushing the envelope beyond the typical beers coming out of Kentucky these days.

For today's beer, I've managed to get my hands on Country Boy Brewing Papaw's Red, which is an imperial Amber Ale aged in Old Forester bourbon barrels. This is the first time it's been bottled, so I'm super excited to crack this guy and see what it's all about!

    Daaa Re...view

750 ml bottle served in a Duvel glass. Pours a deep brownish-orange, almost like a liquefied caramel. Settles about the same in the glass. Menacingly opaque, this beer is very interesting in color. Brownish-purplish-orange? Pretty cool. Barely any head initially, but I managed to get nearly 1 finger of bubbly off-white foam after putting my aggressive-pour face on. Strong notes of roasty caramel, English toffee, and bready malt on the nose. There is a notable bourbon aroma as well, but it's not as overly-assertive as I've encountered in some BBA beers. Surprisingly light weight with a underwhelmingly thin & watery mouthfeel. Thickens up a bit as it warms on the palate, but not what I was hoping for in terms of a mouthfeel. Upon tasting, I get a decent amount of bourbon up front with an equally decent amount of caramel. Some oaky notes in there as well. As I continue to drink this beer, I'm still trying to detect any real flavor aside from the obvious caramel and bourbon, but I'm coming up empty. Fairly consistent from start to finish, but leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. Finishes watery, but goes down easy enough. Leaves a sweet caramel-candy aftertaste behind with lingering bourbon.

Man, I was looking forward to this beer being bottled for a while now. As much as I hate to say it, it left a lot to be desired for me. It had good potential, but I feel like they bottled this thing half-way through. It's lacking any real depth in terms of a flavor profile, and the thin mouthfeel just doesn't really fit. On the flip side, what was there was well-balanced. The caramel notes were sweet, but not cloyingly-so. The bourbon was tamed enough to be very enjoyable; I think if this beer had a body that was more profound, a stronger bourbon presence would've been nice. But as it is, it was well-thought out.

Second run at today's NB is my avatar's doppelganger

    Short's Twist of Cain

Smokey malt nose gives way to the scent of fallen leaves and a touch of green olive.

Tastes straight away with olive, followed up with earthy and hearty herbs, for lack of better description.

Feels pretty silky after the carbonation sting subsides, leaving a meaty and oddly savory cloying sweetness on the tongue.

First up on the NBS agenda is Stone's 19th anniversary Thunderstruck IPA. I was crazy excited for this one on several fronts - it's a Stone DIPA, Austrialian hops, and an AC/DC like theme. All winners in my book.

I'm scheduled to be in NJ in a couple of weeks and have tickets for the AC/DC show at MetLife Stadium and can't wait. They are probably the only band where I own their entire catalog. Just a little heartbroken that Malcolm is no longer able to tour with them.

Back to the beer. This is very well done indeed. Lots of pine aromas, but subtle citrus flavors with just a hint of sweetness. A refreshing twist on typical Stone DIPA. I need to go back by the store to see if there are any left.

    Arthur - Hill Farmstead Brewery

Hill Farmstead Brewery - Arthur Saison
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

    ------------------

Poured from the bottle into a Hill Farmstead goblet.

Pretty much as good as a saison gets in looks. A real nice mild opacity, and brass lemon shiny yellow body. Fine middle column of carbonation, a speckle of small cola bubbles on the bottom add a nice contrast. The head is just rocky retention and filled with bubble bath thick foam. Three fingers on a nice controlled pour, mild island mountain top retention and pill lacing, with even pinhead bubbles in the makeup, that get populated again at the edges when the fine carbonation hits the top. In the glass just looks like perfection.

Wonderful aromas of candy floral hops, some dry sensing farmhouse character just slightly. Pungent and perfume like. Some mild sensing chewy malt character as well give a little bit of doughy bakery sweetness. Not a big funk monster, but just very nicely good sense of soft yeast esters to go with it.

Palate comes with incredible fruit character. This is like eating a bowl of lemons and it's zest but obviously a far more enjoyable experience. Big zesty lemon like oils in the mid palate, and juicy bodied citrus. An almost puckering but soft malt feel in the mid palate. Aftertaste manages to some herbal like qualities of hop, and more of that zesty lemon like oil just comes in spades. Slight mineral and almost pepper like aroma but far more herbal but in a granular like way. Mild sensing tropical notes but very subtle as well.

Another fantastic saison in the Hill Farmstead catalog. Real nice balance and accents of saison and hop character to access a bright lemon and citrus quality. Immaculate well made brew.

    look: 5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.75 | BA generate score: 4.68

    -----------------------

Always fun to come back to these saisons from HF... just great stuff.

    Cheers!

    And now we have

    Terrapin Rye Squared

Sweet candy maltiness overpowers all else at first, but a little agitation brings out maybe some brown sugar.

Tasting this immediately carries a blanket of nondescript bitter, laying path for the brown sugar sweetness. Further along we have a little floral presence finished off with a bit of alcohol.

Highly carbonated and seemingly thin but develops a bit further as it swishes around.

My first Post up in New Beer Sunday. I'm into it with this Baltic Porter from Smuttynose. Not sure how this works, but I will paste my review for you all to see. I actually enjoyed this beer, I was starting to doubt Smuttynose as my last few offerings from them have been lackluster, but this one is legit. I'd go 4.25/5 Cheers.

Appearance - dark brown, nearly black body that poured almost flat, wispy tan head

Smell - dark chocolate, plum, raisin, caramel, toffee

Taste - dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean, toffee, hint of raisin

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, very light/faint carbonation, flavors of the chocolate and roasted coffee beans upfront, slight bitterness on the back end, flavors linger for a good bit

Overall - good representation of the style. An enjoyable beer. Recommended

Price Point - $9.99/4 pack 12 ounce bottles

I envy you being only 50 miles from your daughter and grandkids. My daughter and grandsons live in LA. Another daughter lives in Tampa. Then there's the son in Hong Kong and the other daughter in Phoenix. We have a son close by in Bangor, and another son who attends college in Worcester.
Lots of traveling to visit family!

Hello, fellow NBS-ers! Happy to once again be here sharing a new brew or two with you all & of course reading about your respective new beers of the day - always a treat! Started my day somewhat early, around 7 - which allowed me ample time to accomplish some things, not least of which was getting caught-up with last night's extra-long LNBA session :-)
Went out to a nice French-themed cafe with the GF not too long ago, followed by some grocery shopping. Recently arrived back home & decided to take a shot at new beer #1 for me today:
    Perennial Suburban Beverage Gose
    [IMG]
Sherbie being very cooperative for this pic :-)

    First, some BA stuff:

    A: 3.5, S: 4, T: 4.25, M: 3.75, O: 4, BA says: 4.05

    My official review:

750ml bottle into my Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a just-slightly hazy straw/gold with 1/2" fizzy white head that recedes very quickly. Retention is quite poor, lacing is nonexistent. It's a pretty color, but ultimately just doesn't scream 'drink me!'

S: Here's where things really start to take off. Comes on with a pronounced slightly-musty fruitiness, primarily citrus notes - key lime being the most dominant, tropical hints as well. Underneath all of this there is a pleasant lactic tang lurking without trying to dominate the nose at all. Traces of salinity come more into focus toward the end of a good, long whiff. It's not especially complex, but it is extremely well-balanced.

T: Initially very sharp & tart with citrus, apple & pear emerging & developing toward the mid palate alongside lemonade-like notes. The mid palate itself sees the tart qualities pull back a bit allowing for more of a key lime & saline profile to take over along with a delicate yeasty note. The finish allows just a hint of the tartness back in showing more as acidity. Leading out is salty lemon/lime rind that lingers briefly. This brew is clever & constantly developing on the palate.

M: Moderate/high fizzy carb married to a fairly light, yeasty body. Quite crisp & dry.

O: This is an exceptionally adventurous & daring Gose. It's ambitions really show on the nose & come to life on the elastic & ever-evolving palate. I am quite impressed.

So, safe to say I liked it. It really stands out as a more evolved, risk-taking Gose than what I'm used to. It's ability to be completely style-appropriate while still pushing those boundaries is very impressive to me, along with a the overall sense of balance it achieves.

I know for a fact that I'll be back here later to review something recently BIF'd my way specifically for NBS. We'll see if I can sneak anything else in before that

Until I see you again, wishing you all good beer & good cheer!

I've missed New Beer Sunday the past two weeks, and am glad to be back.
We've spent the last week entertaining my wife's extended family, and had a great time with them.
I played a lot of golf with my father in law (he's 77 and has shot his age a few times!), and I got to know some of the family better. My wife always likes to see her parents, and this time her sisters, nieces, and nephews came. They all left yesterday, my wife went back to work today, and we'll both be working tomorrow.

Today is another hot day, this time with more humidity. I decided to have a beer that was low in alcohol and thirst-quenching. I picked Psychokinesis from Grimm Artisanal Ales.

This is a pretty beer, very pale yellow in color with an attractive white head. Fruity aroma, citrus and melon. Some earthiness. And tart. Taste improved on the aroma. Nice lemon and cantaloupe, earthy, and tannic. It is very refreshing and fun to drink.
