That's a question I don't have an answer to (and would be curious to find out)... "Is it illegal for ebay, reddit, BA, etc. to provide a (virtual) place for others to break the law?"

That, I don't know... if there is virtual version of the "crackhouse law".

Possibly similar to hosting a torrent site, since they don't host the movies and music that is being downloaded?

Again your logic is completely off. When you re-sell a car (which is a ridiculous example because cars aren't a perishable food item) you are not PROFITING off of the car. The only way that example works is if you are talking about drinking HALF a growler and then selling the second half at some price.

If I buy a burger and then sell it to some sap on the street for twice the price, I'm taking advantage of the restaurant, even if I did "add value" by transporting it.

If, in contrast, that person went out and got me a chicken sandwich, and we exchange them, I am no longer profiting alone and it is fair.

I'm not talking about the legality, but the ethics. I know shipping is illegal in all circumstances, I just don't care about that.

My boss paid $150kish for his 2005 Ford GT and sold it used 3 years later with 4k miles for $209k.

I sold my 2010 GT500 for $500 more than I bought it for with 3k miles.

So you disagree with retail entirely I see. If I go to target and buy toilet paper, Target is profiteering! They're taking advantage!!!!

I promise I'm not going to respond after this because I don't want this to be any more contentious than it is and I'd like to see other people posting, BUT...

You absolutely cannot use other retailers as examples. As you are apparently not entirely clear about it, the way that selling toilet paper works is a producer sells to Target, knowing full well that Target will in turn sell it at a profit. The producer enters into the agreement knowing what is going to happen.

When you buy a beer from a brewer, they expect that you will drink it. Profiteering happens when you in turn sell it on ebay at 3 times the price you bought it for.

I am entirely clear about it. Guess what? Wholesale prices are LESS than retail. When the producer knows the item will be resold - they sell it for LEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS. Since these breweries are "unaware" of resale - they are selling full retail and have nothing to bitch about.

So - you move to strike down the trade forums here - correct? As we know - no one here trades a beer for ANYTHING OTHER THAN $4$.

I expect everyone that is so angered over beer on Ebay to strictly trade $4$.
I can't wait to see KH being traded for 2 or 3 off the shelf locals.

Thats actually why I've stayed out of this thread for the most part. Too many people trying to shove their opinions down everyone else's throats as fact. Maybe entitled isn't even the best word for what I'm talking about. I'm just tired of beer geeks getting massive hard on's for wales so they can then post a picture of it in the beer **** thread. Then they turn around and get all sorts of butthurt when they weren't able to land the bottle they wanted. Beer is suppose to be fun but sometimes people get a bit carried away. I don't care whether anyone trades or uses ebay for their wales because it has no effect on me. I just wish people could be more happy enjoying their everyday beer and accepting the fact that they won't be able to have beer from every hyped brewery across the country.

A bottle of Simtra is around $10.99. I'll trade that and a pack of gum for a KH. $4$ even Steven! How much was Ann? Maybe 2 Stone Ruinations?

In the US, I'm fairly certain that when you purchase an alcoholic beverage from an entity properly licensed by the state, all you've done is purchase the right to consume, share and store/transport (under a certain amount) that beverage in the state you're in, with other people of legal drinking age.

I don't think (and anyone feel free to prove me wrong) that you're allowed to resell, redistribute, or cross state lines with said beverage - which includes shipping.

Good post. They don't accept it. They can't accept that some people WILL pay - so they want to take that option away. Do I want to spend $175 for Rare on eBay which is cheaper than trading? Nope - won't do it. But I have no qualms with someone who will - that's their option and I don't need to change their life.

I wear underoos, Batman to be specific.

I do get my roo's in a bunch when people try to limit others to conform to their views. Happens too much in every aspect of our lives here in 'Merica. I can't even drink a beer at the beach in San Diego because of a bunch of whiny bitches who think their way is the ONLY WAY.

The very nature of this thread (ebay beer sales) kind of debunks your degree of certainty.

I'm pretty sure shipping alcohol via USPS is against the law, while shipping through FedEx and UPS are against their TOS because they're a private, non government run entity.

What it comes down to is basically what was posted above. Brewers are not liking the fact that somebody is making a few hundred percent profit off of their work and product. Which is fine by me, and why I continue trading and not buying off eBay and other auction sites. Trading is beer for beer, not money for beer.

While I agree that the quality concern is made with a bit of hyperbole, I have to agree with them somewhat. If person X drinks a really old, mishandled bottle of their beer for the first time, it might turn them off as a customer for a long, long time. That said, the clear irk that these brewers have is the profiteering issue, and I can understand it. I might not agree with it 100%, but I can see it.

I'm sorry, the trading of non beer items is not permitted. Keep that pack of gum and send me a 12 pack of natty light.
