I'm all out of hops.

    I purge a mason jar with Co2 then fill with hops, then purge the headspace with Co2, if there's any headspace. Been doing this for a while now (learned from Gordon Strong), and it works well. I want to invest in a vacuum sealer, but havent yet. This method has been getting me by.

    My sarcasm meter was way off on that one, haha.

    They are about as far away from American C's as you can get. No citrus, no resin, no pine, no "dank" whatever that is. I found it difficult to attribute any one flavor or aroma. They are floral, like flowers, and the SWMBO described them as "rosewater".

    A "clean" bitterness if you will. A very pleasant change for an IPA. I think my first brew with this new order will be bittered with Bravo using Apollo, or mix of Apollo and Columbus, for flavor and Bravo for dryhopping. that should interesting.

    Invest in the vacuum sealer. It pays for itself very quickly once you learn how to shop for food, and buying pounds of hops. Beware of the prices on the bags/rolls for it though.

    I didn't really dig into it. The guy is pretty damn knowledgeable about the comings and goings on the HB scene. I was mentioning how hyped up Citra was, and how it's being used so widely these days, especially in the craft scene, which has moved into the HB scene, and he said get it while the gettin' was good. Citra wouldn't be the power play that is was this year, next year.

    He may be thinking that the experimental hops coming online may replace Citra as the darling hop of the year. Mosaic is coming out this year, adn I like that one. Citra will have some legs, the growers put in a lot of new acres.

    I never knew such an attachment existed. Would this eliminate the need for a canning pot/pressure cooker too?

    For canned wort? No.

    The attachment is just a vacuum seal. It just removes air. Canning sterilizes (or comes close enough).

    Not sure if this will work. And it's a bit loud. I vacuum sealed water. Nothing sterilized it. If I put it out in the sun it will probably turn green. Or something else.

    Oh, someone made the sealer part using a brake bleeder something. If you Google it you might find it.

    AWESOME! I'm just saying a quick trip though the microwave would help sanitize a lot of foods.

    AFAIK you need heat and lots of it.

    According to Palmer "Autoclaves, Pressure Cookers and Dishwashers
    Typically when we talk about using steam we are referring to the use of an autoclave or pressure cooker. These devices use steam under pressure to sterilize items. Because steam conducts heat more efficiently, the cycle time for such devices is much shorter than when using dry heat. The typical amount of time it takes to sterilize a piece of equipment in an autoclave or pressure cooker is 20 minutes at 257° F (125 °C) at 20 pounds per square inch (psi)."


    I think that my pressure cooker at 250*F is 15 psi. But I'm certain that you can't sterilize in a microwave.

    There is a recent Basic Brewing Radio podcast discussing this with (cant remember name) from Yakima Chief? I forget offhand some hop breeding program. Pretty interesting description of the process, namely 10 years from start to something usable.

    That covers canning of fruits and some other foods. I'd be very careful of your take-away from that cover.
