That is erroneous, and was corrected above, as it was Simcoe ans Horizon as the parent stock.

The hop has been mentioned already, but I've been really impressed by beers that use Mandarina Bavaria, especially in dry hopping. Stone's Go-To comes to mind, as does a fantastic local offering in Pittsburgh. Maybe not a craze, but more use of it would be fine with me!

I just had a beer with them. They are hairy and weedy with a succulent tropical fruit. :grinning:

My tongue has not liked the Sorachi Ace and that seemed to me to be one of the "new" hops pushed this year; I'm more of a Citra guy...

Those are descriptor words that I haven't seen before. Are you describing the taste of the hop or the conditions in which the hop plant grows (among weeds) and/or the physical characteristic of the bine (hairy)?

OR, it just hit me.... are we talking about that other 'weed' flavor?

I was guessing that this may be a new variety of hop with a new physical characteristic of hairs growing on the plant, much like poison ivy vines have.

    Explain yourself, Jane.

lol I think those hops are simply pungent. They smell like sweet hairy weeds. As though they have an extra dimension to their weediness. SO fruity too. Here is what I mean by hairy. [IMG]

I just had a single hop ale brewed with HBC 472 (and dry hopped with it) and it was fantastic. This is a hop I'm definitely going to try and work more with.

    Vic Secret

    ABOUT VIC SECRET
Vic Secret is our new budding star. While she’s been seen in seasonal and collaboration brews since 2011, she has now joined our headline hops with her first commercial production in 2013. Lighter and less dominant than Galaxy, yet there is still more than enough character for Vic Secret to embellish the world of beer flavour.

    BREW TIPS
The clean, distinct fruit and pine characters of Vic Secret are best accessed by dry hopping or whirlpool additions. Late kettle additions have been found to impart a pleasant earthy character, but little fruit. She has very high levels of alpha acid so brewers may find it easier to craft the right balance in their beer by dry hopping.

    HOP STORY
Vic Secret’s story began when she was developed from a seedling created in Victoria in 2000. She actually shares the same mother and father as her sister Topaz. She breezed through the selection program with strong growth and yield, until 2010 when the first brewing trials were conducted.

Initial trial brewing was conducted with Vic Secret as a kettle addition late in the boil. Given the seductive aroma of the raw hops, the resulting pleasant earthy character was a little underwhelming. However, it was in the 2011 Bridge Road Harvest green hop beer that she revealed her true character with extraordinary clean passionfruit and pineapple flavours with a light background of herbs and piney resin. Put to the test in Australia and overseas, she has shown us that whirlpool and dry hop additions result in the best flavour pickup.

Seeing her potential, we then propagated several thousand plants from our original experimental plots, planted them out at Rostevor, and waited patiently while they have grown to maturity for their first commercial harvest in 2013.

I'm a huge fan of Equinox. I think Toppling Goliath's best hoppy beer is Sol Hunter (Formerly XHops Red). It uses only Equinox and I think it has one of the most unique flavor profiles of any hop I've tried.

    Dave,

Your post got me to do some researching.

Apparently Comet has been around since 1974?

    “Comet Hops:

A cross between English Sunshine and a native American wild hop, the Comet hop was bred by the USDA in 1974 to meet the need for a higher alpha producing hop. Though commercial production has slowed in recent years, it offers a unique flavor that is best suited to American Ales. With an alpha acid range of about 9.4% to 12.4%, Comet hops offer a substantial bittering quality paired with a distinctly American grassy and citrus aroma. Bittering your American style brew with Comet hops can be objectionable to some, but when done properly the result is one of a kind. Galena and Summit both offer a more readily available substitute to Comet when necessary. See if brewing with this hop is right for you by tasting the effects in highly-rated brews like Brew Dog’s IPA and Dead Comet IPA.”
