Other: I generally don't read the reviews and would rather see a rating from a larger group that just the few that write reviews. If I'm trying something new, I want to enjoy the beer and not have to take notes or write a review. I feel sitting down and trying to pick apart a beer ruines my experience if I'm sharing with others.

At least we still have untappd.

Thanks for doing the poll, @cavedave ... the results are fascinating. I'm shocked "other" is in second.

Anybody shocked that only 2 BAs "don't like sharing their thoughts"? :stuck_out_tongue:

    I generally don't write reviews.

If there is a new beer, and I'm one of the first to rate, I try to write one. If it's well established and I generally concur, I just rate.

I could do a lot better....especially with local breweries. I feel guilty now....someone hand me a new beer

I don't agree with the way reviews are set up, either here or ratebeer. Too confusing. Needs to be simpler somehow, although I understand that is a challenge to program.

This. It's a good "beer journal" of sorts. But if it helps others, so be it.

While I really appreciate the time people take to write thought out reviews, I could give a fuck about reviewing them myself. I want to drink the beer, enjoy the beer, then move on. I don't feel like assigning myself homework. I get annoyed enough at my OCD-self needing to check in everything on untappd, let alone be bothered with reviewing them.

That being said, I don't look at others' reviews anymore either, unless I come across a beer that seems infected and I want to see if others have had the same experience recently.

The good thing about craft beer is that it's...good. But sharing it with beergeeks I see all the time people fondling feverishly their smartphones after the first couple sips while mass beer gulpers really communicate.

No, this is not the imagery from that AB-Inbev's ad, that's what I see all the time in a bar.

Reviewing is really a form of OCD, sometimes mild, but sometimes almost disturbing.

I don't need to read what someone else has to say about a beer to influence my enjoyment of beer, nor do I see your need to read what I say. I've learnt from past involvement that opinions, and reviews, are easy to come by. Some display a lack of ability to describe what they're drinking and others just sheepishly jump on to the next big thing slavishly following because they can't think for themselves.
I know that there are reviews out there that do make an effort to give an accurate portrayal of the beer, but I prefer to make my own discoveries.
And video reviewers are the absolute worst.

I think reviews are great! Good ones and the bad ones! Love reading the bad beer reviews! The thing I like about them the most is to creativeness. And now that you have voice to text on your smartphone it's pretty easy to do a review. But I prefer pictures so, I go to what beer are you drinking now thread the most.

After thinking about this topic some more I would be more inclined to fully review if there was a way to export my data so I could view it the way I want. Or add better data manipulation to the your beers tab.

I wish this poll had options for why I do write reviews.

I found BA in college when I was new to beer and I googled something like "good new beers." The plethora of reviews, scores, rankings, forum musings, and suggestions helped me find new beers to try on a college budget. I write reviews to try to help people that are like me and looking for something new. That's why I try to write reviews for very accessible, everyday beers as well as the occasional whale or two. I will admit that many of my reviews sound similar to each other, but when I go back and read them, they usually jog my memory and I can remember more detail.

Yeah, I prefer to use untappd for first impressions. I can note that I've had it and do short quick thoughts as far as taste and whether I liked it.

Interesting. Well I applaud you for your diligence and making the reviews here that much more complete! For my part, half the beers I review here are singles that I only bought one of or sixers at best. I much prefer to try a new beer about 75% of the time rather than drink a familiar one (unless there's no choice, ie., I'm at a small local bar and I've had everything on tap already), so I think my method is an abridged and truncated version of what you do. If I have a very different opinion of a beer a second time I drink it, I'll change my review, but pretty often, I'll only have one chance to taste it and review it, which is why I've often made up most of my mind and written the review within the first 4-8 oz. so I can relax and stop thinking too hard for the remainder and if I notice something new, I'll add it.

The idea of doing that poll for reviewers to explain themselves has been thought of, I assure you. Let's first identify the reasons folks feel disinterested, unable, time crunched, etc., etc. for not doing reviews
