How would you describe the aroma/flavor of the Founders Azacca beer?

    Cheers!

I had it before my time of reviewing and posting here. I had it at Founders back in March and the only notes I remember making to myself were "this is delicious and worthy of being bottled"

I think Founders described it as "experimental and tropical" on their tap list

South African hops have been mentioned. I like brewing single hop APAs to try various hops, and I recently brewed one using southern passion. It's a nice one for that specific purpose, definitely leaning towards tropical, and as I understood it's meant to be competing against the high AA American and New Zealand hops. It's currently carbonating in bottles, so I don't know the end result just yet, but it's a fun hop worth trying. Equinox is one of my more recent favs too, and I just had one of my hallertau blanc APAs which came out pretty great too. That one is slightly more unique in character than southern passion, packing more lemon and stone fruit than many others.

I see mosaic as the "it" hop now and I think Equinox will likely be the next. Not sure that an aussie hop can get deep enough into the american market yet.

The limiting factor for the Aussie and Kiwi hops is limited acreage. IIRC they have about 1000 acres in AU and around 900 acres in NZ. I do like Galaxy.

Australia is definitely coming up fast but I don't know what they harvested this year. Was just at a farm yesterday that does over 2000 acres here in Yakima... and their hops are amazing. Smallest farm here is about 200 acres for comparison.

Looks like someone mentioned Equinox already. Given how much guys like Palmer and Mosher gush over it, I'd imagine it's going to catch a lot of traction soon.

Haha, maybe not. At an event in Yakima at the beginning of August, there was a sensory exercise where we all got a chance to give our opinions on the aroma of about 25 unknown samples of hops from various breeding programs from around the world. Lots of cool stuff, none earth-shattering, but sample #9 presented an almost 'fecal' aroma to me, but to be nice I described it as 'animal'. While hashing over the exercise with another participant, he told me that his descriptor was 'barnyard'. That sample scored near the very bottom. Not to worry, 'B-Hoppy' is working on some uniquely aromatic lines at this time . . . along with a push for one with purple lupulin, ha! (to tell you the truth, I'll take anything at this point, yellow is just so boring) Hoppy Trails~

It's a reboot of an old hop. I lost it when I stopped playing basketball for a while. It was considered pretty good stuff in the 80's. :wink:I hope it comes back, but I doubt it.:slight_frown:

Its a popular hop now but not sure if I would call it the "it" hop like citra seems to be but galaxy should be it. Every beer I drink with galaxy I love and I just brewed a beer with all galaxy dry hops and the chit was amazing. I find myself smelling the empty glass just because the aroma is still pungent and awesome.

I feel like mosaic is the next up and coming hop. Finding more and more beers brewed with mosaic or exclusively with mosaic. People are starting to talk about their love for mosaic like it was citra. I can't blame them because it's mosaic and galaxy are so amazing and complex (I get such a variety of aromas and flavors) that they deserve the hype.

They may have already had their fifteen minutes, but I really like Amarillos. Does anyone make a single hop Amarillo beer while we're on the subject?

Germany is developing many new hops, more in the American fruity & floral style, such as Mandarina Bavaria, Polaris, Saphir, Huell Melon. These tend to stand out a lot, and are not as grapefruity, but more lighter melon character, grape and floral character.

Australia; Super Pride, Ella, Topaz, all not at the same level as Galaxy though.

New SA hops as well, Southern Passion & J17

But I think only a US-hop variety will make be a big hop in IPAs, and then for me, the second after Citra, is Mosaic. Which pretty much is the new 'it' pretty much. Equinox is growing, but I don't think its character is in-your-face enough to be big.
