The Ayinger is awesome! I had it many times locally but I haven't seen it around in the recent past and that chaps my arse.

Another good one is Organic Pinkus Jubilate.

I'm definitely a fan. Ettaler Kloster Dunkel is one of my go-to German brews. Although from Austria, I've also really enjoyed Gosser Dark. Shame it's not available here in MN anymore.

I am a big fan of the Warsteiner dunkel, and I agree, it is a style you don't see as often.

Bought a sixer of Hofbräu Dunkel yesterday. A really enjoyable style that I wouldn't mind seeing more often. A lot of flavor for the ABV.

Weltenburger is one of the more underappreciated breweries in the world, in my opinion. To my tastes, Asam Bock, Barock Helles, and Barock Dunkles are all near the top of the list in their respective styles.

    I absolutely love Weltenburger.

I have to believe that's because it isn't readily available. Even around here I only find it in a few places -- but I wholly agree, every style I've had has been great. I see there are a couple Weizens too, they're next on my list.

There are a few differnt types of Dunkles, even within Bavaria. You've got the sweetish, malty one from Munich. The hoppy one from Franconia. Then the nutty one from some parts of the countryside. Plus all sorts of one-offs. When I asked about the grists of their Dunkles at a few Franconian breweries, I was surprised at how diverse the replies were.

Hoffman's (of Hohenschwärz) beer is mostly Vienna malt with a little Farbmalz for colour. That's very different from what they do in Munich.

Maybe, but the Black Bavarian I mentioned is almost a clone of Köstritzer, very roasty yet clean in character.

Also one of the very best styles of beer to drink with dinner. Dunkel with a roasted pork shank (shwienhaxe).... Cannot be beat!

There are the black ones, too. Like Klosterbräu's Schwärzla.

Does that compare more to a Schwarz in flavor character?

I figured there would be a fanbase :grinning:. The German lager styles have definitely been making it into my fridge a lot recently.

So I stopped by Merchants Wine after I got off the plane today, and they had this one along with the Doppelbock from the same brand. Never heard of em, but shit its only 3.79 a bottle so that's an easy as hell choice!

They also had a fresh shipment of Frankenmuth Dunkel in so I grabbed one to see whats up there.

And then the Ayinger Jahrhundert Dortmunder was there too!

Price points on German 500ml are always a no brainer as far as deciding to buy or not

Yes, it's very different from a Munich Dunkles.

That's true. I guess I'm lucky that a few of my stores regularly carry Weltenburger.

Agreed...I had the Weißenohe Bonifatius Export Dunkel with bratwurst and lentils and they paired perfectly with each other.
