Last weekend I invited a bunch of people over for a little Blind Tasting. All the Barleywines were provided by myself so no one knew what was being served. Here was the line-up:

    Sebago Single Batch Barleywine 09
    BA Old Ruffian 12
    East End Gratitude 07
    King Henry
    Weyerbacher Insanity 11
    FFF Blonde Behemoth 07
    PT Our Finest Regards
    Hanger 24 Hammerhead
    Valley Brewing Old Inventory 09
    Pelican Perfect Storm 09
    Bligh's Barleywine
    BA Naked Evil batch 1
    Abacus 2011

9 out of 11 voted KH number 1. There was a tie for second with BA Naked Evil and 09 TPS. Third was Abacus. Insanity was dead last. It was very interesting tasting and the results coincide with other tastings. Maybe next will be a Imperial Stout Blind.

Do you have full ranked results?

I'd be interested in seeing how everything stacked up

Very cool. I'm also interested to see how everything stacked up.
We had a (non-blind) BW tasting here in Denver a few months ago and KH was a consistent favorite, too. That stuff really is worthy of all the praise it gets.

Surprised insanity was last. Not surprised King Henry was 1st, it's amazing.

Good to see BA Old Ruff & Bligh's up there, gotta say I though Bligh's would be higher, but good list, falls in line with what I'd expect.

Not gonna lie, I don't see how people enjoy Naked Evil as much as they do!

Really Hammerhead 11? Was it the booze flavor? Was it just off?

    Cheers!

Nice. Many of those will be on for our bw tasting. Hadn't thought of doing it blind, but it is a good idea, maybe we will. Include me as someone who also is surprised Insanity was last, but in that lineup there really isn't a "last".

To most of us it was too boozy, but I had it once before and thought it was really good. For some reason this bottle had tons of heat left, more so than any other without a doubt.

It's funny that people only seem to do barleywine and quad tastings. It's like KH and Westy are the only beers people really want to see ranked blind.

(Also, having organized a blind tasting, it's not all that much work.)

wow very cool. Has there been more posts about blind tastes and rankings in the past? I would be really interested to see results of, say, DIPAs. Heady, Citra, Pliny, Double Sunshine, Dreadnaught, etc...

In regards to these results, the craziest thing is that BA Naked is still on shelves like crazy around here...

I find it difficult to compare barrel aged to non barrel aged....totally different beasts to me.
