I agree sexism is still a major problem but I think that much of what @Dogtirednj said falls under the neckbeard self-styled beer connoisseur set of problems. I've received similar treatment at some places because I don't fit the stereotypical appearance that some of these craft beer bars have as regulars. During a quiet happy hour, I've had one guy see me struggling with a beer menu and asked if a wine menu would have something I would recognize.

I think some of you may be going too far with condemning this "micro aggression" as they're now called by the PC police.

He may have been flirting with you, just trying to be helpful or a sexist. Only you were there, heard the conversation and saw his body language. None of us here can form an objective opinion, only subjective ones.

The world is flat, we cure headaches by cracking skulls open, slavery is a good idea, women shouldn't be able to vote, etc.

Nothing changes if nothing changes dude. My responses may not be the best way to produce change (and they aren't, largely because I'm not here to promote social change) but don't ever give me the "It's how it is" line.

If this guy had opened with telling me what he was drinking, and his thoughts on it, we probably would have had a decent conversation about IPA's or how it's too damned early for pumpkin ales. I love beer. I love to talk about beer. I'm the annoying person who geeks out about all the new releases. And I've had some great conversations with guys in bars who are just there to enjoy the brew with like minded people. But to just assume I need help with all those choices, and to suggest the cider or root beer was a total tool move. Trust me, that will never be a successful pick-up move. Thank God for the Hop Knife. It rectified the bad taste in my mouth his attitude would have left.

I agree with you that the OP is fully entitled to be bothered and rant. She's not the first person to rant on beeradvocate. As for the being hit on, I think whether female or male, if you attractive and are at a bar alone, there should be some expectation to get hit on. This guys attempt was horrible and then very insulting when he offered fruit beer and root beer, but it's going to happen regardless of sex.

I understand that certain things need changing. That doesn't make the current state of affairs not "how it is". Pointing out the current situation is not the problem, though you seem to be more upset about that than the actual issue at hand. I'm not being dismissive but the SJW outrage schtick hurts more causes than it helps. People being better equipt to deal with situations as they occur spurs change. Doing nothing and running home to rant on social media and message boards does nothing.

I agree with you 100% but most of us haven't quite figured out that we should only approach women that give us eye contact or some kind of indication they want to be approached. I can see why women would get bothered constantly having men approach them that they have no interest in.

I assure you that if you knew what I did for a living you wouldn't claim that I'm doing nothing to spur change. My rants on social media is just an extension of my personal and professional values. You may want to hold off on assuming what my life looks like outside of these boards.

I wasn't referencing you, but feel free to get insulted anyways. I was referencing the OP. Be equiped to address situations as they happen and slowly things start to get better because now you've made someone think about about thier actions. Unless this guy is on beer advocate, he'll do the same thing next time he's out. A few 'likes' for the thread, zero change at all.

Ha ha. I have no doubt that the guy in question will do the exact same thing, but maybe someone reading this thread won't as a result of this discussion. That's a positive.

Ok, I'm done taking the bait here.

    Salute!

Anyone is capable of being an asshole, but in general women are more circumspect than men and have learned to navigate the truths of our culture in their own special ways. I have always liked women more than men.
I had a strong Mom that taught manners and insisted on good education. I went to very good schools and always had girls as real friends, and I credit my Mom for helping me in that direction. Ignore the fools.

I have a very strong appreciation for women in the industry and in general. They have a much better palate on average than us males and coming from Canada where the only master cicerone is a woman that says a lot. It sucks that you encounter such men out there but I promise you we are not, all, anywhere near like that.

Can you be sure said neckbeard wouldn't have done the same thing to a guy taking his time reading the list. Just because the guy sounds like he was a ******ed douche bag doesn't guarantee he was a sexist ******ed douche bag.

Fuck off asshole is usually best.:grinning::grimacing: But that is a male response, ask women. My wife says she would have gave him her best go to hell look and turn he back and never look his way again.

Its hard to a be Samantha in these cases....(sex in the city reference).

    AKA, what do I know.

    a) flirting (yep)
    b) mansplaining (like most of these posts, actually)
    c) same has happened to me at a 100+ choice taproom where I was taking my time and a dude offered the same to me. I just looked at him and said "please just let me read this beer ****, I know what I'm doing" and just ignored him the rest of the time...

wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww that's sort of insane. Perhaps he just thought you were new to beer. Hardly sexist. Get off your high horse lady. You should delete this post. Honestly some people are just so over sensitive.

The poor guy was just probably trying to help you out with some killer beer. But of course you had to see it as being sexist. Absolutely incredible. Maybe take a reccomendation next time or be a bit nicer.
